West Homemaking
Dept. Keeps Busy
A '‘Yeast Breads Mini-
•Course” was conducted
June 20-21 in the West
High Homemaking Depart-
ment by Mona Zerkle,
homemaking teacher. Par-
ticipants learned prepara-
tion of yeast breads using
the cool-rise method which
involves a period of 2 to 48
hours of rising in the
refrigerator before baking.
According to Mrs. Zerkle,
this method yields a
delicious loaf of bread or
pan of sweet rolls.
Participants were Kathy
Doherty, Hilma Macha,
Sally Vybiral and Doris
Hutyra.
June 17 a CPR Certifi-
cation Workshop was held
from 8 a m. to 5 p.m. in
the department. Suzanne
Newell from the American
Red Cross in Waco,
McLennan County Chapter
conducted the workshop.
Sally and Kris Vybiral.
Susie and Bernie Siems.
Jeraldine Fellbaum and
Mona Zerkla received CPR
certificates.
A “self-improvement”
workshop June 14-15 help-
ed participants learn more
about basic skin care and
physical well-being. Class
members toured Jennifer’s
European Skin Care in
Waco and heard physical
fitness tips at Figure
World.
Back at the homemaking
department, students
learned more about skin
care with their own
personal facials. Mona
Zerkle, homemaking teach-
er, and Sally Vybiral gave
instructions on use of skin
products and make-up.
Sally Vibiral showed
each student the step-by-
-step process of a profess-
ional manicure.
Sandra Berger, Melanie
Mazanec, Jackie Zahirniak,
Amanda Gerik, Kris Vybi-
ral, Bonnie Harris, Regina
Moore, Susie Siems and
Michelle Marak attended.
West Drum Majors,
Majorettes Get
Awards
West High School drum
majors and majorettes
came back from summer'
camp at Southern Metho-
dist University in Dallas
last week with several
ribbons and awards.
Paula Barton and .Cath-
erine Mynarcik, the 1983-
-84 West dru^ majors,
won five first place
(superior) ribbons at the
camp. Catherine also won
the outstanding Drum
Major Award from a field
of six candidates.
Kim Kolar, Laurie Sulak,
Kelly Pfleiderer, Kathy
Kolar and Helaine Wernet,
1983-84 majorettes, receiv-
ed four first place (super-
ior) ribbons. Kelly and
Kim also won Star Awards
for twirling.
Baylor University
Names Honor
Students
More than 251 students
at Baylor University were
named to the Dean’s
Academic Honor List and
the Dean’s Distinguished
Academic Honor List for
the 1983 spring semester.
Students from West
named to the “Distin-
guished” list are Lillian J.
Kolar, a junior, of 410 S.
Washington and Charlotte
Richardson, a senior, of Rt.
1.
Diane M. Marak of
Abbott, a junior, also was
named to the Dean’s
Distinguished List as was
Ruby F. Hogans a senior
from Axtell.
To qualify for the
Distinguished List a stu-
dent must earn a minimum
grade point average of 3.9
and be enrolled in at least
15 semester hours.
