Another Point of View ByKeithPeck
The first public school in America was opened in Massachussetts
in 1647. The primary text was the Bible. Its purpose was to teach the
three R's, reading, writing and religion. While the first public schools
were rather primitive, they did an effective job of molding young
minds. There is no doubt that the early Puritans would be dismayed
at the lack of religion being taught in today's public schools. It has
occurred to me that many of the problems with discipline, behavior
and ethics being experienced in today's public schools just might be
traced to the neglect of moral teachings by the public schools in the
early grades. The foundation is flawed.
Why has the present generation strayed so far from the basic
fundamentals? The first schools were the responsibility of the local
communities. The central government passed a law making the
establishment of schools mandatory. It was up to each community to
arrange for the financing, the teacher and the facility. No help was
offered by the state government nor was it expected.
