WHY?
Why will some motorists persist in.
trying to beat a railroad train to a
crossing?
Why will others turn out and pass
another car, when they intend to turn
at the next street intersection or park
in the next block?
Why do they turn out and pass you
on a country road, at forty miles an
hour, and then settle down and drive
a comfortable and safe twenty-five
miles an hour immediately after they
have passed you?
Search us. We haven’t the an-
swer.
But sometimes we are tempted to
believe that while all motorists are
not d-n fools, yet every d-n
fool is driving a motor car.
—Breckenridge Gazette-Telegram.
OMISSION
It isn’t the things you do, dear.
It’s the things you leave undone,
That gives you a bit of heartache
At the setting of the sun.
The tender word forgotten,
The letter you did not write,
The flower you did not send, dear,
Are haunting your dreams at night.
The stone you might have lifted
Out of a brother’s way;
The bit of heartsome council
You were.hurried too. much to say;
The loving Jouch of the hand, dear,
The gentle, winning tone,
Which you had not time nor thought
for;
With troubles enough of your own.
For life is all too short, dear,
And sorrow is all too great,
To suffer our slow compassion,
'J'hat tarries until too late;
And it isn’t the thing you do, dear.
It’s the thing you leave undone,
Which gives you a bit of heartache
At the setting of the sun.
—Margaret E. Sangster.

Those who would see the eclipse
should rise with the sun, as it will
wear the mask of the moon when it
appears. At that hour it wil^ be easy
to look right into the Sun’s face,
especially as it will be partly hidden
by the moon.
Unless it is clear, the eclipse will
not be seen, but observers will know
that is happening, because darkness
will linger long -after it should be
bright. So often at this time of the
year cloudiness is prevalent at sun-
rise, and Jjhis unfavorable feature may
mar the beauty of the eclipse^
The eclipse begins on the Yucatan
Peninsula, and near Mobile, Alabama,
at sunrise, which is 39 minutes before
sunrise here. The sun rises at Corpus
Christi on the 24th at 7:21 a. m. The
total eclipse will ocpur at 7:38 a. m.
Of course there will be opportunity
after totality to observe the eclipse,
but increasing brightness of the sun
Will make it difficult. Totality will
not Qccur here, ,but there will be only
a thin crescent of the sun visible.
The early hour will add to the
weirdness of . the phenomena, and
darkness will be very pronounced. If
cloudy, the morning will be like night,
and lights will be necessary until after
nine o’clock.
It is one of the most ghostly of
heavenly phenomena, the sun shines
with a greenish'pale light and ani-
mals are sometimes distressed.
Eclipses occur when the moon is
new and near one of her nodes (the
point where the -moon’s orbit crosses
the ecliptic). The reason a total
eclipse of the sun is visible aver so
small a part of the earth’s surface
is because '©f the smallness of the
moon and the great distance of the
sun, averaging 93,000,000 miles. *
It is easy to "walk beneath the
shadow” of the moon, and get out-
side of the path of totality.—Corpus
Christi Times.

anyhow. When the price of an egg
is as high as a telephone pole, the
hen ^trikes, and when the price goes
down! the hen works overtime on the
egg supply. The hen is like some
merchants in this respect. When
trade gets dull the merchant does not
advertise, but at a season of ?the year
when he couldn’t keep patrons out of
his store with a club, he^will spread
an advertisement afll over the news-
papers. Really the hen is the great-
est advertiser in the world. Every-
' time she lays an egg she gets out in
the yajrd and ctows about it. There
are a j few women in America who
make more money off the poultry yard
than the husband does off his whole
farm. But they understand poultry

the be^t of results. And sometimes
they loan the old man a little money
to buy ipalves with or pay his taxes.—
