She shivered/though it was Sum-
mer time, and the sunlight lay warm
within the apartment, but she an-
swered not.
“Ethelinde,” I urged, “do you love
this man?”
My pertinacity seemed to annoy
her.
“You have no right to ask the
question,” she returned, distantly.
I was not to be restrained. I were
less than human if I had not contin-
ued.
“You will not answer the ques-
tion,” I said; “then I will answer it
for you. You do not love this man.
It is impossible for you to do so.
';our two natures can no more assim-
ilate than day or night, than heat or
cold. You are all that is good and
pure, with a loving, generous heart
—he all that is base and mean, of
the world, worldly. He but seeks
you for your wealth; your beauty
and refinement would be lost upon
his sensuous mind and sordid, grasp-
ing spirit!”
She rose suddenly to her feet with
an imperious gesture.
“Mr. Edwards,” she exclaimed,
with dignity, “you forget yourself.
This man/of whom you are speaking
is my accepted husband. I cannot
listen to his detraction from the lips
of a disappointed rival.”
It was a bitter retort, but I had
goaded her to it. I was dismayed to
find how high this man stood in her
estimation, and yet is was but nat-
ural. He had been her father’s as-
sociate in business for years, and
no doubt was, in the world’s view,
an honorable man

so long ago—I was but a boy at the
time; hut I have always had a sus-
picion that the wife, or a child, mav
be living, and if they should happen
to turn up unexpectedly—and that
is the way such people do turn up,
it would be awkward.”
The subject appeared to perplex
him greatly, though how he could
be interested in the matter was more
than I could understand. He cer-
tainly was not the partner and rela-
tive of whom he had spoken so am-
biguously. I was resolved t}o make
him speak plainer.
“There is but one way to solve the
difficulty,” I said, as he sat in a
brown study; “employ some trusty
agent to make inquiries and ascertain
if the widow, or child, are in exist-
ing them, they might be induced to
ing them, they might be induged to
sign off their claim for a mere nomi-
nal sum.” i ;
He grasped eagerly at the idea.
“And you are the very man to
do it,” he cried. “You are poor, and
a lawyer—your conscience can’t be
too tender. I didn't intend to trust
you w ith the names, but, as you say
it is of no particular value, why you
may as well take it to aid you in your
researches—that is, if you’ll under-
take the job?”
“Readily,” I answered, controlling

I also became
aware how hard a task it would be
for me to shake him from his posi-
tion, and show him to the world in
his true character. Yet the rebuke
nettled me, and I resolved to perse-
vere.
“A disappointed rival,” I answer-
ed. "True, Ethelinde, most true—
you need not remind me of it so
sharply. If I have loved you, if I
still love you, with every pulse of my
being, surely it is not a crime. Nay,”
I continued, as she strove to check
me, “I must speak now, if it is for
the last time. Perhaps you rejected
me on account of my poverty. I am
now rich, for I have unexpectedly
found a fortune.”
“It makes no difference,” she an-
swered sadly. “Rich or poor, I should
have—”
She checked herself, and a roseate
blush overspread temple and cheeks.
“Ethelinde!” I cried, passionately,
“you do love me, you know you do;
then why seek to hide it? What is
it that urges you to wreck our mu-
tual happiness for .life? I tell you
I am as rich as this man who seeks
your hand. Will you still prove in-
exorable?”
She withdrew the hand I had
clasped in mine?—it was icy cold-—
and answered:
‘T must.” |
“Is that decision unalterable?”
“Yes.”
How coldly the monosyllable fell
upon my ear. Her manner nearly
drove me wild.
“You know the saying,” I .cried:

“Some time,” I answered briefly.
He leaned over to me suddenly,
and said, with great earnestness:
“See here; I want an opinion. I
suppose you know as much about
law as any of them?”
So Mr. Joshna Taggart had come
as a client. I inwardly resolved that
his bill of costs should be a heavy
one.
“I studied In the law office of one

I replied. “State your case.”
His case was a very difficult one.

Before I had finished she was on
her knees before me, clasping her
hands in bitter anguish, and the
great tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Oh! givp me that paper,” she ex-
claimed, “and I will bless you. Thank
heaven, he placed it in your hands—
it saves me from worse than death—
a desecration of God’s holy altar, and

A sudden light broke in upon me,
a light which made me see my future
way clear and straight. I had dis-

floor and placed her in a chair. She
was. trembling in every limb, but it
was’more the excess of joy than any
other emotion.
“Be calm, Ethelinde,” I said,

“Of my own accord—willingly!”
How icily the words fell upon my
ear; and she sat there before me,
looking more like a carved image of
despair than a living woman. There
was some mystery in all this. She
was so unlike her own free, impul-

relinquish her, yield her to this soul-
less, unprincipled man? No!' She
was worth another effort—I was re-
solved to make it.
