MEALTIME MAGIC

The child who cannot hear is
b^lly handicapped. Hard-of-hear-
Ing children are often considered
backward and become greatly re-
tarded In school when In reality
they may be highly Intelligent but
simply cannot hear much of what
is said to them. Children who ap-
pear backward in school should be
observed carefully to determine if
hearing is a factor in the situation.
According to Dr. Geo. AV. Cox.
State Health Officer, many injur-
ies to the ear can be prevented by
keeping foreign objects out of the
ear canal, taking good care of the
ears during colds and other diseas-
es and observing certain precau-
tions when swimming.
"The cause of middle ear trou-
ble often is diving and swimming,”
Dr. Cox said. "Protect the ears by
wearing a rubber cap, or ear plugs.”
The State Heaith Officer declar-
ed that no hard instrument of any
kind should he used in cleansing
the ear canal since it may be injur-
ious. Using ordinary precautions
can do much to avoid minor ear
trouble which may later lead to
partial or complete deafness, the
Doctor added.
