There is no excuse; for this con
dition, but the fault lies with the cit-
izen as much as with the public- of-
1'ical. As a rule, officialdom supplies
only what citizenry demands.
As spring opens hundreds of thou-
sands of men should be at work on the
public roads of this - country. But
they are not. There is much talk,
more grumbling, unlimited inactivity,
and then forgetfulness in the joys of
the latest sensation.
Such is the reputation we have
earned in road construction.
What's the matter with us, anyway?
We are glad that San Patricio

tinue until every public road in these
counties is put in first-class condition.

The largest and most enthusiastic
of our church meetings took place
last Sunday in Jackson’s Hall, the oc-
casion being the organization of the
National Catholic Womans’ Welfare
Council, by Miss Lyda Dougherty, who
has been appointed by Bishop Right
Reverend Joseph Nusbaum to organ-
ize this Council throughout the dio-
cese. ' ; './j,
After the solemn High Mass, the
beauty of which was greatly enhanced
by the Cathedral Choir of Corpus
Christi and the exquisite melody of
the violin by Mr. Beever, the entire
congregation proceeded to the hall
where a bountiful breakfast v
served to all. Needless to say that
full justice was done to the many good
things spread upon the long tables.
After a time spent in social enjoy-
ment, the real business of the meeting
began. Miss Lyda held the attention
of her audience by the clear, concise
way in which she stated the meaning
and purposes o'f the organization
y iShe brought home to her hearers I
the fact that the majority of our j
women have been so . engrossed in !
their home liRk they hav<y overlooked
the duty they owe,, as American cit-
izens to the public, as well

Another very pretty party of the
week, was gfven Thursday afternoon.
April 14, at the attractive home of
Mrs. J. F. Odem in South Sinton, a
few friends, and the 42 Club being
guests.
Upon their arrival, the guests were
welcomed by Mrs. Odem. assisted by
her mother, Mrs. Brauer of Beeville,
and invited into the dining room
where Miss Genevieve Becker presid-
ed in serving very refreshing punch.
Ferns, silver and crystal vases of
roses, and spring flowrers placed about
the rooms made this well appointed
home all the more attractive.
Five tables were placed for games,
which were very much enjoyejJ, after
which the tables were laid with linen
