Our sole object in this campaign of publicity is for the purpose of explains
ing to our subscribers something of the problems which we liave to solve from
day to day and to explain to them the various ways in which they can be of
assistance to us" and to each other.
The thing you are most interested in as far as we are concerned is Ser-
vi^l ’ “Service is a magical word, and back of it, wlityj applied to the telephone
industry lies more hard work and more genuine stick-to-it-iveness than any
other business. It is not like a cloak, something that can be put on or taken
off at wiil, but rather a result, and that result depends upon the co-operation
of stockholders, officers, directors, employees—and you, dear subscriber, each
one doing his part in the daily round of life.
The war threw everything out of joint and ihe telephone service suffered
along with everything else. There were various reasons for poorer service.
First, there was more traffic—the telephone was used more freely and for
more purposes than ever before. We did not complain; we were glad to be of
service; think of the part we played in the four Liberty Loan,Campaigns, the
Red Cross; the Y. M. C. At, k. of ,C„ the United War Fund, and many, many
other war activities of the past two years. With equipment and force to handle
a normal load of 18,000 calls per day, in Sherman, we suddenly found our
calling rate jump to 22.00CL calls, and then wc foMnd Uncle Sam calling for our
men and .your men and you began to call for our trained girls to take the places
of your men and we had to train other girls and the "flu" played havoc with
them for several months and then—well, we whipped Germany and, the war is
over—so is the “flu.” •
- -- - • * .... i
You want better service and we want you to have it and you are going
to get it—in fact it is better now and it will get better every day.
The articles which we shall publish from day to day will be taken from our
experience and your experience and the experience of our friends. Some of
them may be original in make-up but a)l of them will be tried and practical.
*9
We want yqu to read thenv-every one. Better still, cut them out and pre-
serve them arid when the series is ended, read them afl over again.
Tomorrow, the subject of our discourse will be "Who is the Grayson Tele-
phone Company ?" and we believe that it will -prove to be the only entirely or-
iginal production in the, entire series. We guarantee that if you read the head-
lines you will read the whole story.
Now, let’s cut this article right out and appoint one member of the family
to do the same thing each day. Wc believe it will be the first step toward the
better service that is to follow. We have tried to express our good-will in this
htessage and that will be an expression of your good-will, and, by the way, had
you thought about it ? That is one of the most necessary things in connection
with good-Eelephone service—GOOD WILL. — ‘ '
