DANGEROUS EY1 STRAIN,
It Hat Marly Symptom! and May Af-
fact tha Whola System.
Chief among the symptoms of eye
strain are watering of tb« eye, a glu-
ing together of the eyelldshou awaken-
ing in the morning, headache, the posi-
tion and character of which vary with
each individual. It may be neuralgic
or it may be deeply seated.
The headache is often replaced by
an inflammation of the eyelids, espe-
cially In young and healthy j^irsoiis,
who also have a little coujunjjtivltls,
with a feeling of tension or fulness in
the eyes which may become real pain
of a dull aching character, the eyeballs
beJhf very! tender on pressure. j I
Sometimes there arc vertigo and sick-
ness, with dyspepsia, palpitation and
even difficulty in breathing. Sleepless-
ness is a very frequent symptom, due
in part to the excessive flow of blood
to the brain and In part to the low
tone of the whole nervous system.
The symptoms of eye strain appear
sooner in those who lead a confined
and sedentary life, who follow occupa-
tions w hich need a constant use of the
eyes In had or unsuitable light nnd in
those who are debilitated from any
cause. The symptoms appear later in
those of coarser flber, who pass much
of their time in the open air or who
follow occupations whiqh do not peed
a prolonged use of the eyes for close'
work,—Loudon Lancet. ,

Fifth Warders Meet .Satirrday Night to
Work Against I wiling Hogs Be
Kept in Fifth Wards.
II. S. Varner,' a traveling man for
thu Pittman & Harrison company of
this city, has just' returned from ini
aiitnniobile till» OVCr twenty nullities
in Texas. As to the crpp and gen-
eral outlook over the territory travel-
vil. he said':' ‘ v<
“I h3ve just, returned from a tour
through twenty counties, going from
Sherman west, to Wichita Fills, Sey-
mour. Stamford, Sweetwater," Abilene,
Dublin, Fort Worth, Dallas, I teuton
and bn'ek to Sherman.
"In the 20 eouhtW I find all hut
Denton, Dallas, 'Collin, Tarrant and
Grayson, with practically no grain
prospect at all. Ih nhont 10 counties
T foilnil the cattle grazing it down.
“All west of Cooke Obtutty, south to
Fort Worth;' ''are Very dry, ho
moisture since shows last winter. The
farmers are blue but Will 'living in
hopes of n gisWl crop of cotton and
feed stuffs. They are Spending their
time until it rnlfis irrigating gardens
so they may cut the cost of living and
help whip the Kaiser.
“The cotton acreage everywhere I
have been is goiDg to tie cut from 10
to 30 %.. South of the T. & I*. K. It.
anil east to Dublin cotton acreage Is
going to he. cut nt least 50%. Their
commercial crop is going to lie jiea-
nuts.
“They say peanuts at $2.00 per
bushel is better than 18c cotton, be-
cause they are cheaper to produce or
raise. In that section about 10% of
the gins will not run this season.
“After one leaves ‘old Grayson,’ and
falls off the good gravel roads, be
seems to feel a different ntmospbere.
The prospects are not so-good and
neither is business. I felt and saw
this same condition until my little
Ford crawled on gravel roads again.
"The war talk seems to be strong-
er nnd people are more nervous over
the situation than Grayson people. I
saw the best, looking com in Denton
county, best looking wheat, oata, bar-
ley and rye in Grayson county. The
only cotton I saw up to a stand was
ill Grayson county. From Cooke
county southwest; for 12 counties there
•wont lie 500 iiounds of binder twine
used on smfftl grains.”

Saturday night at the Fifth Ward
Fire station of those who are oppos-
ed to the passage of an ordinance
permitting hogs to tie kept In the
North and South Fifth Wards of
Sherman,
Dr. T. S. Ciyce presided and G. C.
Harney acted as secretary. p
The committee appointed at a pro- ,
vlotis meeting to circulate petitions
against the proposed ordinance show* -
Hi that 140 iid.pie residing in the \
wards had signed the petitions diking -
the commission not to permit hogs \
kept.
One gentleman who had made a ,
thorough canvass of the ward, stated ]
that the statement tnnf raising lioesj -
would lieip the widows and the or-l]
plums of the Fifth Wards evidently is «
an error. He says lie found that \
those who desire hogs are men whose ■
salaries range from $80 to $125 per ]
month, and that, the widows and or- '
plums referred to dp not want the •
hogs in the wards at all.
Dr*. Ciyce was selected as chairman -
of a committee to appear before the ’
commission tonight to present the |ie-
tttkm and ask that the proposed ordi-
nance lie not passed. This committee
is emniHised of G. c. Harney, c. It.

Dr. Ciyce expressed the hope tha I
