were killed by an ex-plosion of two
thousand pt>nods of dynamite at one
of the pack bouses of the Aetna
Powder company near here. The
explosion would have been worse but
for the fact that the dynamite was
lying loose in one hundred pound

Milwaukee, Nov. 12.—John
Schrank pleaded guilty today to
shooting Col. Roosevelt. The court
thereupon decided id appoint a com-
mission to investigate bis sanity.
Schrank appeared little concern-
ed over the fact that his liberty^was
probably In jeopardy for tlio next
fifteen years.
He said, "My crime was political
rather than a„critne against human-
ity and I guess with all the political
crime that has taken place in the
last few years they won’t be very
hard on me. However, if they do
give it to me hard I can take my
medicine."

Schrank. who attempted to assassi-
nato Col. Theodore Roosevelt, .refus-

whether he would plead guilty to

Regardless of Schrank's plea or
desir', District Attorney Zabel was

case, he announced. He had arrang-
ed to ark the court for a commission
to examine into the assailant's sin
ity, should he plead guilty, so that
criticism of the state would not fol-
low incarceration in the state pen-
itentiary should it later develop that
S hrank was not mentally sound,
the event of a plea of not guilty,
witnesses were ready to proceed wi h
the trial.
CONTINUANCE REFUSED

torneys this morning filed in an ap-
plication for continuance of his trial
alleging that many important de-
fense witnesses are absent.
Judge Swaytte overruled the con-
tinuance motion and the jury choos-
ing began. Three of the most im-
portant defense witnesses were fin-
ed five hundred ch liars each ail'd at
taehments were issued for them at
Ilte request of the defense counsel
because these witnesses bad failed
to appear at the' trial. During the
jury ehonsinr Sneed was alert. Stud
led the faces of the talesmen and of
fered frnonent suggestions to his
counsel. The first twenty-three
talesmen were excused and no jurors
were chosen at the forenoon ses-
don.

t 10. Miller of Ben Franklin,
Texas, died this morning at S : 10

continued illness. Mr. Miller had
been here about three weeks but
was sick some time before coming
here. lOvery attention has been
iven him but of no avail. Kid-
ney trouble was the cause of death
He was 22 years of age and a na-
tive of Ben Franklin, where liajl a
drug business.
llis wife, Mrs. Miller, little daugh-
ter. bis mother and a sister have
been here during his illness. They
boarded at the home of Mr. and
Mrs \Y. H. Davis, near the sanita-
rium. *1. F. Miller, father of de-
ceased. is here today .from Ben
Franklin to accompany (tie body
home. Dr. Estes of Bennington, Ok-
lahoma. father of Mrs. Miller. is
expected to arrive during the af-
ternoon
The body was taken in charge by
Haynes & tSporer, funeral directors,
and will be shipped this afternoon

to Ben Franklin.
