Some time ago City Judge J. P.
I .(-die of this city suggested that next
summer—utxrat June or July—there‘ he
a gathering at old Mantua In ( ollin
comity, or rather where old Mantua
used to tie, for the purpose of properly
(debrating the fiftieth anniversary' of
the (‘(tilling to that community of the
Mantua Seminary, which was opened
l,v Capt. James L. Greer, now of Mc-
Kinney. in 1867. The seminary was
under the sipierlntendency of (apt.
Gn*er from 1867 to 1870 at Mantua
and was <gien teu months in the year.
In 1874 and 1875 he moved the school
to Van Alstyne.
Judge Uslle says this was at that,
time tin* best school in North Texas
and whs so recognized nnd adds that
Capt. Greer was not only an able
teacher, but a fine disciplinarian. Nev-
ertheless lie at all times hud the love
and respect of the boys and K“'ls
who attended his school.
Among the families in North Texas
nt that time who Utfd children in the
school, and who have representatives
of the family yet living, were: The
t’roagors. Rollins, Taylors, Stinnetts,
Mounts, Mahons, McKinneys, Browns.
Kellvs. Nichols, Wysongs, Issues,
Dysarts, lair. Partshs, Mallows, C«>1>-
ers. Jmlds, Slaughters, Carters, t off-
mans, Bakers. Thorntons and perhaiw
"‘Sles Judge Ix-slle, there are three
others in Sherman who attended the
school. They are Jim L. Lewis, Mrs.
\ J Oslln ami Collin A. Kelly.
Since making the suggestion n few
wei'ks ago, Judge Leslie has had many
neoplii to stop him and nsk him,to go
ahead and organize for such a rerndou
as lie mentioned and has also receh
several letters. .
Capt. Greer is a resident of Mi Kb -
nev and is enjoying splendid-health,
and Ids former pupils would, like to
honor him at a reunion.
