Singers Are Called
Good Insurance Risk
BOSTON.—A singer is ordinari-
ly a good life insurance risk, ac-
cording to Dr. H. Augustus Smith,
professor of church music at Bos-
ton university. Dr. Smith bases
his claim on the fact that a sing-
er’s lungs and throat are fully
developed and therefore there is
less likelihood of pulmonary dis-
eases.

AUSTIN, Nov. 26.—Preceding the
sell-out varsity clash by a day, Uni-
versity of Texas and Texas A. & M.
freshman football teams will tangle
at College Station Wednesday after-
noon (today) with the home boys
favored.
The Aggies fish topped by n point
the Rice Slimes who trounced the
Yearlings 9-0. Earlier the Yearlings
defeated only 19-0 an Allen Acad-
emy team that had lost to the em-
bryo Aggies 0-40.
Clyde Littlefield’s first-year squad
has a fewr good prospects on it but
lacks the all-around class and man-
power that the Yearlings have had
in recent seasons.
Among the best-liked newcomers
are Raymond Jones, hard-driving
Austin High fullback; Don Fnm-
brough, sturdy blocking hack from
Longview; Coy Warren, springy-leg-
ged wingback from Cisco; Glenn
Morries, giant tackle from Temple;
and Allen Lawler, fast tailback from
Texarkana, Ark.
Jones, probably the pick of the
squad, early beat out Johnny Pet-
rovich, former Pacific Coast phe-
nom, for the first-string fullback
job, although Petrovich may start
against the Aggies because he is
the acting captain for the game.
Other Yearlings of varsity poten-
tialities include the starting ends,
Max Bumgardner of Wichita Fall?
and Duane Coltharp of Austin, Line-
men Hub Speer and Dale Weaver
of Temple, Smoky Huff of Wichita
Falls and Bob Hart of Houston,
Center Robert Patterson of Texar-
kana, Ark., and Tailback Travis
Raven of Austin.

‘Superior’ Dive Bombers
Being Built for U. S. Navy
SANTA MONICA, CALIF. — The
Douglas Aircraft company reported
that powerful dive bombers, which
it described as “superior in per-
formance to types in Europe’s war,"
were actually in production for the
United States navy and were being
delivered in quantities.
The new craft, designated as
“SBD,” wero described in the com-
pany’s announcement as having ex-
ceeded in tests the performance of
the German Junkers "Stuka” bomb-
ers "and they boast performance
and armament that make them
among the most formidable In the
air today."
The SBD is an improved version
of the Douglas BT bomber, of which
the navy has a large number
service on aircraft carriers.

British Soldiers May
Wear Helmets of Rags
LONDON.—Britons soon may be
wearing "rag” helmets due to a
shortage of regulation “tin hats”
made of steel. The steel is needed
for guns, tanks and ships.
Experts have produced a substi-
tute "crash" hat made chiefly of
rags for armament workers. It is
half the weight of the regulation
helmet and only slightly more preg-
nable. They will be placed on sale
to civilians.
No More County
Meets For
Bay City Cagers
As King Football fades into obliv-
ion for another year .talk of the fast
game of basketball is already heard
on many sides.
High School basketball will be
played differently this year. In-
stead of a County Meet, in which
Bay City met the schools of the
County, i. e., Markham, Blessing,
Palacios, and Van Meek, the Black
Cats will play the teams on the Dis-
trict 30-A football schedule.
In other words, the basketball
district will be composed of the
same teams in the football dis-
trict: Bay City, Boling, Wharton,
El Campo, Richmond, Eagle Lake,
and Rosenberg. Each team will
play the other twice in a round-
robin series. The schedule will be
released soon.
The winner of the district will
go to the regional meet, and the
winner there will go to the State
tournament.
This department believes this
change will have a marked effect
on basketball in this section. We
believe the change will increase in

Sprints at Fire Siren
LITCHFIELD, CONN.-Neigh-
bors looked amazed as Mrs. J.
Matthews began sprinting toward
her three children when the fire
siren emitted its shrill blasts.
Then they recalled that she was
a refugee from England.
"Every time I hear a siren I
think I'm back in England, and
it's an air-raid alarm," she said.
Brother Mac Does
Well Punting and
Line Plungimg
Both Boomed
For All-Southeast
Football Team
Those football playing brothers,
Earl and Mac Johnson, scored 73
of Bay City’s 116 points this sea-
son.
Earl, who is being considered for
the Houston Post’s All-Southeast
schoolboy football team, breezed on
end-arounds, his specialty, for 8
touchdowns. Big Mae, who played
fullback on offense and end on de-
fense, tallied four touchdowns on
vicious line plunges.
But Mac’s chief claim to grid
greatness does not lay especially
in points scored as it docs his vic-
ious line plunging, particularly
when yardage was needed, nnd his
somewhat phenomenal average of
about 45 yards per punt.
Earl, a junior, weighs 158 pounds
and is ns fast as a Sally Rand fan.
Mae is a senior and tips the scales
at 200 pounds—yes, you guessed it,
he’s been labeled the Kimbrough-
type of bruiser.
Other scorers on the Bay City
team, which finished in a tie for
third place with Wharton, were
Randy Cox, fleet-footed junior back,
three touchdowns; Pint Carroll,
senior tailback, two touchdowns, nnd
Shearer, blocking back, one touch
down. Ehlert made four conversions,
Shearer made three, and Carroll and
Mac mad« one apiece. , '
