Colonel Kirkpatrick also express-

European war. He said: “It is the
greatest shame of civitixation. and
the war is brought about by the
greed and craving for power of the
kings and men in high authority.
The poor fellows who are actually
killing each other are not even
mad at one another, and have no
were cause for taking each others’
lives than 1 have for taking your
life or you have mine. The work-
ing men of Europe missed the
greatest opportunity they have ever
bad to serve humanity. Suppose
they had said, when the’ enrolling
clerk, came round to enroll them
for service in the war: ‘We do not
believe it* this thing you call war;

brother mans life; we strike; we
will nol f|ght.' and paid *to roy-

needed, and while we do not believe
in even you being killed since you
have been born into the world, but
if somebody i$ to be put up and
shot at and killed, .you go and he
shot at and killed,’ there could
have been no war, for it is .a
fact, and not a remarkble one, eith-
er, that very few of the nabob
class are getting on Ihe firing line.

The following story sent ont from
Madison, Wis., and priutPd in a
number of tew ©papers will prove of
interest in ?herman where Miss Nor
fleet is well known being a graduate
of Kidd-Key Conservatory:
“Wisconsin audiences iove music
—reai tnusic. That they do dis-
proves the superstition that only
lopular programs are appreciated by
the people." This belief is held by
Miss Helen Norfleet, head of the
l iano work at W»lk Cafleji, Aurora,
N Y., an exclusive college for women
with a music department endowed
by the formet Mrs. Graver Cleve^nd,
who married one of the professors
there.
, Miss Norfleet and her company*
have just clcsed the third year of
ertist programs in Wisconsin and
North Dakota under tho auspices of
the state universities of these statest
The programs themselves formed an
experiment in whether, the people
will take the best quality of art.
Nowhere, declares Miss Norfleet, has
she played t-i/ore such evidently sin-
cere and attentive audiences as are
found in the small towns of the
northwest. Their responsiveness
makes her feel warranted in saying
that '“only the best programs should
ever be given. Only shallow musi-
cians and imperfect performers de-
trend to vaudeville afunts to hold an
audience—to get their work across
"In some circles,” she continued;
one will find these alleged artists
who discuss most animatedly and
with fervid enthualasm* ihe Tricks of
‘getting it ever the footlights’* But,
an investigation »f their tjualifica-l
tions usually reveals the fact thari
they are immature individuals un-
equipped for first class work. The
lvceum world is full of such and
that is why musicians trained to con-
cert standa-ds are reluctant to enter
this field. P.ut, on the other band,
nothing is too good for any audience,
if Ihe person giving it has the artist-
feeling and the technical endow-
ment. With such they mav feel
ensured that composition* ordinarily
performed only In select musical
circles will be grateful to the people.
‘‘If ‘hey have not The arti*:-
