dollar picture mode for the First Na-
tional Exhibitor*’ Circuit, is a clever
Intermingling of laugh-provoking
burlesque on trench life with deft
touches of tife drama and pathos of
war.
Taking the ludicrous happenings- in
the life of the average - doughboy as
the embellishing action, the famous
comedian lias injected into the story
of “Shoulder Arms" an occasional sug-
gestion of the tragedy and grief of
war ill tl)e devastated portions of
Northern France. This makes an un-
usual combination in Chaplin comedy
portrayal, and servos to heighten the
effect .of the humorous situations.
The story pictured in “Shoulder
Arms” takes Charlie through all of
(lie training experiences of a recruit,
and then blows him into a first line
trench, prepared for action with nn
armament by which he could lie mis-
taken for a soldier, a cook, a cham-
bermaid, a milkman, a valet, or' a
pi urn tier. This equipment constitutes
his idea of what a doughboy should
have and doesn’t get. He is prepared
for every exigency from cooties and
rats to the flooding of his dngout.

Paramount picture, “Fuss and F’enth-

The story of “Fuss and Feathers”

it was directed by F’red Niblo under

Interesting Diaries.
The literary critic of the New York
Evening Post is moved to moralize
upon the importance of wrttlhg down
the record of one’s experiences while
they are yet vivid In the memory. He
says: "It is’astonishing how much in
terest nn aver ge, everyday life can
hold if the diarist only preserves the
original gvsto Of his experiences.
Some people need to have the good
luck of happening in pt fires and ca-
tastrophes, wars and alarms, In order
to add flavor to their lives. Others
find their excitements in trolley cars,
street scenes, and the not extraordl
nary routine of business and domestic
life. But the fewest of us combine
with the virtue of enjoying contempo-
rary commonplace the added grace of
remembering With an equal vividness
and interest. Time bolds a sponge
with which he wipes away the keen-
est outlines of experience for the bet-
ter part of humanity. Could Pepys
have compiled his diary, at the end
his life, from notes and memories
brilliantly for posterity?”
