Shooting at Collinsville.

at Collinsville, this county, about '■>

Ruth Christopher of that plucc took
three shots at. a young man described
as Alton Hayes. Fortunately none of
the shots hit. their murk, and Hayc*
was uninjured.
Hayes’ assailant, was taken in cus-
tody by Deputy Sheriff Run Roberts
who happened to lie in Collinsville
on business, and was placed under
$500 bond for assault to murder.
Bigamy Case on Trial.
State vs. J. A .1 law son is the style
of n case on trial in the Fiftenth dis-
trict court, in which the defendant is
charged witli bigamy. Dawson plead-
ed not guHty, and is conducting his
own trial without the aid of an attor-
ney. On the stand lie admitted that
the two women, lsith of whom were
in the court room sitting side by side,
were ids wives, one of whom he mar-
ried at Hobart, Okln., on Dec. 23-
1015, ami the other at Sherman on
Nov. 25, 1916. The first wife, Edith
Harris Gibbs, was married; it is al-
leged, under the name of Ira Gibbs,
and the. second wife. Ellen Buchanan
Dawson, under the name of J. A. Daw-
sen. The defendant bases Ids defense
on the claim that he was under the
influence of alcohol at the time of
marrying his second wife.
It appears that both wives are on
friendly terms and have been living
together for some time.
