with the oncoming tribe, the immineney
of the fight seemed to grow greater,
and at last Rev. Wharton anil his
companions decided to make n final
effort by penetresting tin* lines of tlie
aggressive trilie and getting the ears
of their leaders. Strangely enough,
when they advanced into flic forrests
when* the neighboring trilii* was ar-
rayed a few minutes before, not a war-
! rior was to la* found: they had without
warning accepted mediation and dis-
persed. But oif turning back, the mis-
sionaries found warriors of their own
trilie lichind every tree. The black
men were determined that wherever
their missionaries went they would
also go. loiter, tlie leaders of the
neighboring trilie came Into the vil-

the diffosenees between the trllies, and
a payment of penalties on the part of
the neighboring tribe.
Is Chief in Tribe.
.lust liefore he left for America, Rev. I®,
Wharton was initiated as a chieftain |
into tin* tribe with which he spent I
three years. He brought back with him
a symbol which chief.stains of tjie tribe
carry, denoting their authority. This i
symbol is vested by the native with I
unusual powers, If us they array I
themselves for a tribal war' their
chieftains lay (these symbols "liefore
them, they understand that the chief-
tains regard the war os an unright-
eous one, and they ungird themselves,
if their chieftains lay tlie symbol
across their paths as they depart, they
will never come Iwck until victorious.
Rev. Wharton said that lie hopes at
some time to have the opportunity of
testing tlie power of tlie symbol over
the natives belief.

One of tin* uuoat evil practices that
(he missionaries are. attempting to
break up is the use of the poison cup,
which is a part of tlie .wich doctor’s
practice. According to native belief,
sickness in a member of till* family is
caused by some one in tlie tribe with
an evil spirit. Knowing of several
enemies whom lie believes might have
an evil spirit, tlie tribesman goes to
the witch doctor and gives him the
names. Rubbing rosin over a large
image and calling tlie names, the doc-

sticking of the rosin as lie calls a cer-
tain name “much as some people in
this country determine things by the

TIk* tribesman then goes to the indict-
ed-person and accuses him. Tlie ac-
cused agrees to take the poison test.
He drinks a cup of poison; if he vom-
its it and lives (as those of strong
constitutions do), lie is innocent and
collects damages; if he is of weak con-
stitution and dies, he is guilty. Many
good men have b(>eu gotten out of the
