suddenly in a field how many cubical
eighths of an inch there ure in a tri-
angular body whose three sides arc re-
spectively 20,145,780 yards, 0,842,738
yards and 54,085 yards, he gave the
exact solution within an hour or so.

Siren In Skirts.
Which is the most recent siren (of
\be animal variety) in history? Jacobus
Xoieras relates that in 1403 a siren was
captured iu the Zuider Zee. She was
(says Mr. Norman Douglas In “Siren
Land") brought to Haarlem and, being
naked, allowed herself to be clothed;
she learned to eat like a Dutchman;
she oould spin thread and take pleas-,
ure in other maidenly occupations; she
was gentle and lived to a great age.
But she never spoke. The honest burgh-
ers had no knowledge of the lan-
guage of the sea folk to enable them
to teach her tbelr own longue, so
she remained mute to tbe end of her
days.
Influence of Woman.
You cannot tiling that the buckling
on of the knight's armor by ills lady's
hand was a mere caprice of romantic
fashion. It Is the type of an eternal
truth—that the soul's armor is never
well set to the heart unless a woman's
hand has braced it, and, it is only when
she braces it loosely that the honor of
manhood falls.—John Kuskln.
