REFUGEES ESCAPE
FROM TURKISH TERRITORY
IN HOME MADE BOATS
Cairo. Egypt, May 2S.—A family of
refugees from Tripoli, Syria, ha* just
arrived here, having escaped from
Turkish territory In a boat of tlielr
oivn manufacture. The boat was con-
structed entirely at night, bul l Inside!
their house with the utmost secrecy.
A* soon ns completed. It was launched
late one evening on a rough set. The
journey to a place of safety was a ter-
rible one, the occupants of the boat be-
ing much of the time waist deep In
water and escaping sinking only
through tireless and iiersistent hailing.
According to Information brought
by this family, the population of Je-
rusalem had lieen reduced about 60
per cent since the war. Some smaller
villages, particularly on the northern
coast of I/dm non have only one-seventh
of tlielr old population left, thp re-
mainder having either died or emi-
grated to the Interior to escape starva-
tion.
This year's crop In Syria is esti-
mated at only 25 per cenUTfie nornn-1
average. The price of bread in Bey-
rout i* about 30 cents n pound, or $1
I a pound in paper money.
