Messrs. Best & Armstrong, confection-

new quarters on the north side of Main

the best business block of the citv, have a
convenient store room, and are manifest-
ing much taste in displaying their goods.
In the rear, opening out of their sales-

will have finished off and decorated in an
attractive s*>lc as an ice cream saloon,

serious disturbances, notwitiv tandir.g the
interest was kept tip at fever heat all day,

our community.
The vote was the largest ever polled in
the citv, being 1347 votes.
As we go to press it is impossible to
give anything more than a surmise as to
the result. Those who were at the polls
all day are of the opinion C ill" is elected

A Thrllliniily Interesting Hook.
Some time since wv called attention to
I an interesting b 10k s.'on to Ik issued bv
the Southern Publi hiny Company, en-
titled “The Woman in Battle,” being a
narration of the adventure, exploits.and
travels of that famous woman in the davs
of the war, Madame Loreta Janneta Vel-
j azquez, otherwise known as Lieutenant
Harry T Buford, C. S. A. No one fa-
miliar with the history of the war will
miss reading this intensely interesting
book. It was to have been issued early
in the winter, a id the electrotypes were
all completed some weeks since, but the
publishers decided to largely increase the
number of engravings, w hich necessarily
required a short postponement of (he pub-
lication of ttie book. The engravings are
nearly ready, and (he book will be ready
early in March. It will contain over Coo
pages, all (except title page) printed en-
tirely in phono, raphfc characters, repro-
duced bv the Graniti prm from short-
hand manuscript, written by the editor.
The ihjeet is to give—First, good pho-
nographic r adiug matter for writers and

enable our readers to answer intelligently
the claims and assertions of the advocates
of those systems. Filth, Answers to cor-

In our opinion, anil it is based upon an
experience as a short-hand writer of fif-
teen y ears’ standing, the careful study of
about all the many systems based on
Isaac Pitman’s invention, and the reading
of numerous treaties on s’, nography, is
that Munson’s is the best system of brief
writing ever published. Iti very simple
and consequently easy to learn, and as

quirements of legability A large pro-

li .ison to Rejoice.
Surrounded as we are by adulterations
of food and drink, and living in the midst
of their vile products, it ought to pro-
duce at ’east a refreshing sensation to be
told where a real genuine article can he
obtained. Such a species of gratification
can be had by purchasing a box of Dr.
Price's Cream Baking Powder, or a bot-
tle of his Flavoring Extract, Economi-
cal houv. keepers will no doubt have ev-
ery reason to rejoice alter making such a
thrifty investment; for the biscuits and
articles made with Dr. Price’s Baking
Powder aie really elegant, while the fla-
vor to cakes, puddings, and sauces that
his Flavoring Extracts give, are as natu-
ra1 as the fruit from which they are made.
Aside from this, their absolute purity
renders them wholesome and agreeable

The Election in the West.
Latest election returns from Jaeksboro
show J at k county has gone solidly Dem-
ocratic, the constufion beingcarried by a
large majority. Tne election passed off
quietly although there was considerable
interest manifested. Reports from Cam-
bridge, Decatur and Pilol Point say
everything was quiet, but that owing to
the large vote polled at each place and
the pretty generally scratched tickets, the
results will not be known before some
time to-day,
Farmer and Mitchel happened along and
observing that he required lasing in, un-
dertook the job at once—a job which came
very near proving too much for them, as
voter aforsaid—from the country, not ol
Cresset—objected strenuously to any such
reisrictons of his liberty. For a few mo-
ments it looked “squa’ly” in that vicinity,
as Voter’s friends rushed to his rescue
The counsel of good citizens prevailed,
however, and order was soon restored
by taking the obstreperous Voter to the
cooler.

The I'Utol.
A News reporter was present on Tues-
day when a fracus occurred, near the
polls, on Skiddy street, and was surprised
to see a policeman draw a six shooter in
a crowd of several hundred persons, and
swing it around as deliberately as an or-
dinary “billy.” It was not discharged,
nor did our reporter sc any blow struck
with it. But the question arose, why was
the weapon drawn at all? The man ar-
rested was guilty of no grea'er offense
than assault and battery, and had not re-
sisted sufficiently to endanger the person
of the officer. H id it been discharged in
that crowd, even in self defense, innocent
persons would have been killed or woun-
ded.
