The toutes taken bv Texas cattle
(in their wav East foncentrate main-
ly in Chicago. The experience of
the present season has been discourag-
ing to those driving across the Indi-
an Territory. The number driven
was veiy large, and the tinancinl
Btress has compelled owners to hold
their stock, and very many of t*hem
are broken up—being obliged to sell
at any price, simply because it was
impossible to winter them in the
North, and would be ruinous to drive
them hack. This experience will
doubtless lead many owners to en-
tertain the purpose of holding their
cattle in Texas, and shipping them
tatted as the market requires. This
business is already quite large, and
during the past season hundreds of
fat cattle have been sent by rail from
Denison. The majority of recent
immigrants to Northern Texas were
small farmers in the Northeast, ac-
customed to raising corn and grass
(to which this section is, also, well whowish
adapted) and feeding stock; and)
they wilt naturally take to feeding in
the winter, during which season fat-
ted cattle will be shipped, just as
they now are in Iowa, Illinois and j ■
Ohio—giving the jM„ k. & I. roan | r AMES joiINSTON, M. 1)
u continuous live stock business the J
year rmi and establishing at Den-
ison a ruling market, like that at Kan-
sas City. The railway Company, as
in the cattle trade, are making every
etiort to attract the cattle to this route.

The illusti ations of the Aldine have
won a world-wide reputation, and in the
art centres of Europe it is an admitted
fact that its woodcuts are examples cf the
highest perfection ever attained. The
common preiudice in favor of “steel
plates,” is rapidly yielding lo a more edu-
cated and discriminating taste which rec-
ognizes the advantages of superior artis-
tic quality with greater facility of produc-
tion. The wood-cuts of the Aldine pos-
sess all the delicacy and elaborate finish
of the most costly steel plate, while thev
afford a better rendering of the artist's
origin a!.
The quarterly tinted plates for 1S74 will
be by Thus. Moran and j. 1). Woodward.
