THE KEY-XOTE.
y'
On tlw 81*t iriat. the Democratic
convention of lndiuna met at Indi
atto|ioliu,wnh Hon. T. A. Hendricks
in the chair. The committee on
resolutions reported the following,
which Was unanimously adopted.
A* the resolutions are really the
key-note of the campaign for 1880
we republish them in full,
and will reserve our comments
for a future issue:
The Democracy of Indiana, being
assembled in convention, declare
that national bunk notes shall be
retired, and in liou thoreof shall bo
issued by the government an equal
amount of treasury notes, with lull
legul tender quality.
That we are in favor of making
the United States notes, commonly
culled greenbacks, full legal tender
in payment of all debts, public and
private, except such obligations on-
ly as are, by tho terms of the origi-
nal contract under which they wore
issued, expressly payable in coin.
That tho right to issue paper mon-
ey, as well as coin, is tho exclusive
prerogative of the government, and
such money should bo issued in such
amounts as the sound business in-
terests of the country may from
time to time require.
That we aro in favor of such leg-
islation by congross us will author-
ize taxation by States of United
States notes, in common with all
other money.
That we deem it unwise und in-
expedient to enact any further leg-
islation for the funding of the na-
tional debt abroad, through moans
of a home syndicate and other meth-
ods, and wo behovo tho true policy
of the government and best inter-
ests of the people would bo 6iib-
servod by legislation so as to distri-
bute said debt among our people at
homo, affording them the most fav-
orable and practical opportunities
for tho investment of their savings
in the funded debt of the United
States.
That we aro in favor of such leg-
islation which shall fix tho legal
rate of interest at not exceeding six
per cent per annum.
That we demand tho restoration
of the silver dollar of four hundred
and twelve and one-half grains, and
with full legal tender quality in pay-
mont of all debts, both public ami
private, and that the coinage there-
of shad be unlimited and upon the
same terms and conditions as may
-be provided for tbo coinage of gold.
That wc are in favor of the im-
mediate and unconditional repeal ol
the resumption act.
That we aro in favor of tho most
rigid economy in public oxpendi
taros, and that tho fees and salaries
of all public officers should be reduc-
ed.
That we are in favor of the re-
peal of the bankrupt act.
That wo sincerely depltfre tho re-
cent violont collisions between la-
bor and capital, and to provont the
occurrence thereof, and to protect
future public order and security, we
believe that tiio wages of omyloyes
of corporations engaged in the busi-
ness of muting, manufacturing and
transportation, should be a first lion
upon the property, receipts and ear-
nings of said corporations, and that
said liens should ho declared, defin-
ed and enforced by appropriate leg-
islation, and that wo favor tho pas-
sage of a law for th1' ventilation of
coal mines—one that would ho just
to the miner and owner.
That the democratic party is the
friend of tho common school system,
and will in every legitimate way la-
bor lor its success, *nd will oppose
any attempt to divert any part ol
the common school funds to any sect-
arian purpose.
Wo are opposed to class legisla-
tion, and protest against tho grant
of subsidies by the federal govern-
ment, either in lands, bonds, money
oi bj- pledge of tho public credit.
That we abhor and hold up to
public detestation tho loaders in the
republican party who secretly con-
nived, and with bare faced effront-
ery carried out tbo schcmo by and
through venial returning boards,
whereby Samuel J. Tilden and
Thomas A. Hendricks, the people’s
choice for president and vice-prcsi
dent, were wrongfully kept out of
the position to which a free people
had called them.
We bold it up as the monster of
the age—« crime agsmst free gov-
crumeui, a crime agoisnt the elect-
by the people whom they here out- j
raged.
That we denounce the act ol tho
president of the United Stales in
appointing to high and lucrativo po-
sitions corrupt member* of the re-
turning boards, and condemn the
acts of federal officers in attempting
to interfere with the rights and
powers of state courts in the prose-
cution of tho criminals.
That our senators and representa-
tives in congress bo iTnd are hereby
requested to socure the passugo oi a
law giving to the soldiors of the
Mexican war a ponsion similar to
that now given to those of the war
of 1812.
