The question has been raised in Sher-
man, to whose duty it is to put the coun-
tv clock in position. Martin thinks the
county ought to do it, but as the city.of
Sherman gets all the benefit of this
$1,500 investment, it naturally occurs to
an outsider that the city corporation
should feel enough interest in the matter
to bear the expense.

The past year was a piosperous one for
the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway,
The load has gained the good will of the
communities through which it passes,
which has resulted in a good local pat-
ronage, and the advantages which it af-
fords to the traveling public generally,
and particularly to people going to Kan-
sas or Texas, have made it the popular
rou‘e to all points in the Southwest.

Cowbeldom, Jan. 28,1877.
Editor Deniawi Newt:
Cowbeldom! a vague, indefinite place,
but allow me to exhonorate myself from
any design of a new ''Mineral City*’
dodge. Cowbelldom is a big kingdom,
a«,d we can invite hundreds of thousands
to give it a local habitation and name
without any imputation of**sell or swin-
dle.” And it is certain that if they could
view the world with the “ken of an angel”
they would not find a more beautiful
country wherein to pitch their tents. So
let them bring along their little acorns,
feeling assured there is soil enough be-
neath, and sky enough above for their
oaks to spread immeasurably.
To see the incoming trains even this
late in the winter, one would think Texas
charged bv Providence with a “mission
of immigration.” But O, some of them
are sorry looking specimens. I spent
three hours in the crowded Junction
House at Hearne, and when I left I
thought “the more I see of men, the bet-
ter I like dogs.”
Guess 1 am stepping on somebody’s
toeb, without begging pardon, but it is a
truism I was irresistably impelled to ut-
ter. If yon have ever seen the crowd you
know it, if not, words cannot paint it.
But perhaps they will make energetic
citizens, for it requires some nerve and
pluck, or desperation, for a man to loose
himself from all old associations and
steer for an unknown life, in a strange
land. And the mother, who is as vigi-
lant in the care of the little ones as a
prairie-hen when a hawk is in the heav-
ens—on her falls the heaviest burden of
this moving. But, woman like, she will
bear her part bravely, deserved^ earning
her reward; and in Hie vague “sweet bye-
and-bye” I see her the happy mistress of
a Western home, that is as full of happy
little hearts as the bird nests in the
woods.
There was.a rising Texas youth, about
lourteen years old, on the train; a school
boy “home for the holidays.” I think he
was the most knowing infant(?) that
ever left his mamma’s apron strings. And
the slang he did talk! He did not seem to
be acquainted with the pure English lan-
guage. I do not object to genteel
slang. L expiesses so much by a
word, but how I hated to hear the
Yankee vulgarisms fall from his lips. We
have in the South marked provincialisms,
it is true, but they are national and local
peculiarities, which we love and
should be proud to preserve; there is a
sweet Southern flavor about them, that
tells of the old plantation and the old black
mammy who n \rsed us. Let our chil-
dren keen their lips pure from these hor-
rid alien expressions that eminate from
the scum of Northern cities, but let them
say “tote,” insist upon their saying
"tote;” knowing that it is a home coin-
ed word, and morever one of the most
classical in our language, (trom tollo-to
lleie-toti-totum.)
Mark Twain’s apprentice must be try-
ing his hand at spring weather ready for
May, and right ,wcll the is succeeding;
our temperature is as summerlike and
tropical as Cuba. Glass is springing up,
and the streams are green with tresh
crisp, celery-like cress, and we revel
salad.
Austin is going wild over Gov. Hub-
bard, but I am afraid they are a fickle
people. Onebhiy they cry "Hosanna,”
and the next “Cruciiy Him.” They in-
augarated Gov. Coke at the point of tlie
bayonet, and in a lew months were de-
nouncing him. Lone Star,

Cogent Reasons tor a Grand Success.
Conspicuous among the highest exam-
ples of success which the present century
can show is Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters.
The record of its triumphs over diseare is
to be traced in the written acknowledge-
ments of thousands who have experienc-
ed its beneficent effects, and the evidence
of its popularity is to be found in the vast
and growing demand for the article in
North and South America, Mexico, Guate-
mala, the West Indies, Australia and Eu-
rope. The reasons for its unparalleldd
success are cogent ones. The accumulat-
ed evidence of nearly thirty years shows
that it is a certain remedy for malarial
disease, as well as its surest preventive;
that it eradicates dyspepsia, constipation,
liver complaint and nervousness, coun-
teracts a tendency to gout, rheumatism,
urinary and uterine disorders, that it im-
parts vigor to thee feeble, and cheers the
mind while it invigorates the body.
