At Hie Washington—
A gripping drama of the great‘out-
, doors is promised In "tUliat Ain I
IMd?” Mae Murray’s latest picture,
which will- l*e shown at the Washington
Theatre today.
The story Is enacted against a back-
ground of primeval forests and some
realty remarkable scenes have been
obtained. Those who love Nature will
find an added enjoyment In the story.
,wh}ch is simple aud dramatic in
theme.
Mae Murray, that former Idol of the
Follies, will startle her old admirers
by her portrayal of a girl of the wilds,
b light *up by a drunken father near
u primitive, backwoods settlement.
Into her life comes “The Stranger.”
u yonng man from the great world
beyoifj the mountains. He Is instru-
mental > in saving her from the brntal
village saloonkeeimr and whiskey
smuggler, who bargains for her witli
her besotted father. - ,
In turn, “that lirat of YarnoHV’
saves the life of “The Stranger’’ when
he falls a victim of the smuggler’s
pai g. The big climax comes when "The
Stranger” Is summoned back to his
place 1n the outside world.
At the Gem.
Rose Stahl’s greatest dramatic suc-
cess. written by '(’tins. Klein, was
Maggie Pepper," and it had its first
presentation in Decemlier. 1911. at the
1-14 H* Theatre, New York City. Un-
doubtedly one of the most successful
st* ries ever staged, this play presents
a remarkable human touch which im-
mediately met with popular approval
A pictnfixation of the play starring
Ethel Clayton, will be displayed at
the Gem theatre Friday and Saturday.
There hits probably been no play of
recent years in which the element of
heart interest lias lwen so eonqieU- ^
ing as in this romance of a department
store employe, for Maggie Pepper, head
of the silk department, for fifteen
years lias hail nothing but the com-
ntonplaces of business in her thoughts
until suddenly she becomes, obsess®!,
with the desire to enter society. This
she does with complete success and
wins the admiration of a man who
turns Out to be the head of the firm,
recently returned from a long sojourn
In Europe.

At the King.
Torn Mix. the hard riding, hard
fighting. WlHlam Fox star. will bv
seen on the screen *>f the King theatre
Friday and Saturday in hi* latest pho-
toplay entitled “Fighting for Gold.”
Tin- various critics who have viewed
tills picture at advance showings have
pronounced it just about the best,
thing that Mix has mixed In for quite
a While. And that’s saying consider-
able when all is dime with saying for
tiffs fearless Fox star lias given
some mighty fine pictures to the pub-
lic during the last year or so,
“Fighting for bold" was written by
William Macleod Rhine and produced
under the direction of Edward J. I,e-
Saint. It tolls the story of an English
miner working a claim in the United
States. His troubles are looking after
lit* wayward partner and keeping the
British firm operating on the land next
■him from jumping his claim. Even
when romance enters the routine of
this ivy no means dull existence, the
fellow’s troubles increase instead of
disappearing. There is milch villiany
afoot and the hero has a hard time of
it. keeping himself out of jail for a
crime he did not commit, keeping his
mine ami keeping his girl. However he
comes through with flying colors after
tlie Thfills are over.
At the Queen.
Billie Rhodes, tlie vivacious little
screen comedienne. appears in her
latest starring vehicle, “The Lamb
and the Lion" at the Queen theatre on
Friday.
She looks mighty little to be doing
all the housework for a gang of
crooks, but gets away with it In the
role of “Boots,” a ward of the gang
leader.
When she finally persuades them to
allow her to accompany them oil their
next burglary she dons boy’s dothes,
which makes her look smaller than ev-
er.
The little star has a wonderful op-
portunity hi this production and takes
advantage of every , moment in her
many characterizations. When she is
captured by the society woman in the
house marked for burglary, this wo-
man has an object in concealing her
from the police.
She proposes to humble a wealthy
Englishman who has scorned her and
tlie only way she could do it properly
was to polish tills young “criminal”
into a society bud and try to ninrry
her to the sou of the man who scorned
her..
Then she would be revenged by
pointing out to the father the stain
upon his boasted lineage.
But she is foiled. “Boots” was of an,
excellent family wheg tlie truth final
ly was hroqgljt fqftq in a wo» Cra-
nia tic" manner by her reforftSpo b
lar nnd former guardian. The transi-
tion of “Boots" from- rags to riches is
truly wonderfal to toehold.
