DENISON,
TUESDAY...........MARCH u, 1873.

The bill increasing the President’s
salary to $50,000, and also the salar-
} ies of Congressmen to $6,500 passed
the House on the 1st instant, and the
Senate on the 3d.
J. M. STRATTON,
On last Tuesday, says the Sherman
Patriot, a stone-mason named Win.
Powers, was found dead near the
south-west corner of the square. An
inquest was held over the body, and
as no marks of violence were found
on his person, the juiy decided that
he came to his death from excessive
drinking, exposure and starvation.
Another of the numerous victims to
that great scourge, alcohol!

WAGONS,
There are two states in the Union
which still retain that relic of barbar-
ism, the whipping post, namely:
Deleware and Kentucky. It is but
recently that two men were publicly
wliipped in Trigg county, Kentucky,
while a bill is before the legislature
ot that state to abolish this brutal
mode of punishment. It seems that
the bill meets with considerable op-
position.

NEW PROCESS FOR CURING HIDES.
A process for curing green hides
has been invented during the past
year by Adolph Rock, of New Or-
leans, and is now in successful opera-
tion in that city by the Louisiana
Hide and Leather Company, J. B.
Guthrie, manager. The article used
is liquid, and cures the hide in from
one to two hours, a process which re-
quires from 15 to 20 days by salting,
and at the same time does awav with
all offensive smell in hides. To cure
a hundred pounds of hide, about a
gallon of liquor, worth say 60 cents,
is used, and in the process the gelatin
is coagulated and protected from de-
structive action when the hide is lim-
ited. It is claimed that this process
retains in the hide everything requisite
to make merchantable leather, that
they will keep any length oftimeand
in any climate without injury, and
have .better affinity for tannic acid,
thus giving better gains.
This is the first move ever made
to simplify and shorten the process
of curing hides, and if successful, will
produce a perfect revolution in the
green hide market; and, if the leather
made is as good as is claimed bv tan-
ners who have used these fine hides,
the process will be a benefit to the
trade.
