Plot. Kirkwood is of the opinion
that our solar system has not existed
over twenty or thirty millions of
years.
Stephen Longfellow, a brother of
the poet, lias invented a ship’s com-
pass that is not deflected by masses
of iron in the immediate vicinity.
The howl of the compass is surroun-
ded by fnir magnets, which are in-
sulated by means of porcelain or
glass knobs so completely that a six-
pound magnet placed within a very
short distance does not a fleet them.
According to a correspondent of
the Courier, a Sherman chemist has
discovered how to make a tiiatrate
article of brandy out of sawdust.
This correspondent, who is a tem-
perance man, is disheartened at the
news, for how, savs he, can we ex-
pect our cause to be successful,
when a man can take a rip saw and
go out and get drunk with a fence
rail? We confess the question is too
hard for us, and refer it foi solution
to our friend Dr. Younge.
Joseph Albeit of Vienna, photo-
grapher to the Court, has succeeded
in photograpiug colors, if we may
believe the Vienna Press. The se-
cret consists in analysing iiglit into
the primary colors, yellow, blue and
red, and so preparing a plate that it
will be effected blit bv the ravs of
one color. A plate for each color is
prepared, from which negatives are
taken. Each negative is then placed
under a cylinder or roller covered
with ink agreeing with the plate.
Printing the three colors ovei each
other in this manner, is said to give
a result surprisingly true to imtuie.
We learn from the Outlook, that
a lamp exploded in the residence ot
Capt. Geo. A. Reynolds, at parsons,
last Sunday night, setting lire to the
books on the stand and Destroyin'.;
them, and also a portion of the bed
ding. The explosion of the lamp
was not heard by the family, and bad
it not been for the timely discovery
by Mr. Boggs, who lives north of the
house, the residence must have been
destroyed. The fire was extinguish
ed with quilts and shawls. Three
lamp explosions have taken place in
Parsons the last two weeks, which
the Outlook attributes to the use of
cheap coal oil.

The citizens of Hill county an
very much agitated over the Advent-
ist question, the Seventh-day Bap
lists having been holding meetings
in different portions of the conutv foi
some time. The paramount subject
with the Hill county people just now
is, what day they shall keep, S.-tur
day or Sunday. There is Ifetlc doub'
the Adventists have the Bible on
their side, but we are in accord with
tlieW uco Examiner on this question,
that Sunday is just as good a day as
any other, and we can see no practi-
cal advantage to be derived from
sitting around all dav Saturday with
our hands in our pockets, while oth-
er persons ale at work; neither do
we care to put ourselves to any spe-
cial inc jnvenience to work on a day
that our neighbors devote to rest or
recreation.
