No money is awarded to winners
in the student competition division.
"In this division all we know is that
KNTU has placed,” Stallings said
To enter the scholarship area, stu-
dents had to submit examples of Lheir
television or radio work
Mullens said, “I mailed in exceipts
from my show ‘Good Morning NT’
which was of three interviews that I
had reported on. I’m real excited about
winning the award because 1 feel that
it will enhance my career down the
road.”
Mullens is the co-news director at
KNTU and Stallings is the tape editor
at KRLD news radio in Dallas.
Stallings was awarded another
scholarship, the John Bayliss Scholar-
ship. It is a scholarship through the
Alpha Epsilon Rho, which is NT’s
broadcast society. This scholarship is

It’s I a.m. You’ve been on the job since
6 p.m. The parents were supposed to be
back by midnight. The kids didn t settle
down and go to sleep until 11:30 p.m.
Big brother watched too much wrestling
today and tried to bodyslam little sister
tonight.
You think of the movie “Adventures
in Babysitting" and laugh. You have
plenty adventures of your own. Why.relive
someone else’s?
Scott Milder, Austin junior, recounts
one of his worst experiences as a baby-
sitter:
“I was sitting a 3-year-old one evening.
The boogcr was obnoxious, and he
wouldn't stop playing boxer. He was
constantly hitting me with his fists.
“He got tired and sat on my lap —
he was still wearing diapers at the time
— and then he started giggling. He told
me he had just made a ‘doodle.’
“My evening went downhill from
there,” Milder said.
“1 was very inexperienced with kids
at the time and wasn't sure what to do,
so I told him to go into the bathroom and
clean up.
“He came out with ‘doodie’ all over
him. His clothes, face and hands were
covered. Then his parents walked in
“I got a big tip that night, but I’m
not sure why they never hired me again,”
Milder said.
Many college students supplement their
incomes by babysitting Some students
have been babysitting since high school,
yet they never know what to do when
they feel they are being taken advantage
of, or how to prevent it.
Vohreh Mansour of School of Human
Resource Management’s child development
lab, said she believes a parent should he
willing to pay minimum wage $3.35 pci
hour, for the care of a child
For their part, Mansour suggests stu-
dents take the time to explain to parents
what they can offer the child besides
supervision.
“If they are students in college and
they have some knowledge about child
development and use their time con
structively and educationally, (babysitters)
should place more value on what they can
do for the child." she said

If a babysitter can offer parents educa-
tional games and materials for their
children, Mansour said parents should be
willing to pay more.
“They (sitter and child) could have
something ready for the parents when they
get back to let them know they aren't just
sitting on the couch, watching the child,”
she said.
Lisa Smartt, a former teacher at Happy
Days Preschool in Denton, said she be-
lieves babysitters should be paid at least
$4 per hour, plus an additional dollar per
hour for ech additional child.
“People pay $20-30 per hour for a
plumber or for someone to fix then washer
and dryer, and (hen they expect people
to come in and take care of (heir children
for $2 an hour," she said.
However, Smartt does say babysitters
can take preventalive measures to ensure
they will not be shortchanged
“Before you go into the situation, the
price needs to be determined,” she said.
"It should be your price. It shouldn’t be
determined by what they pay other baby-
sitters. You are an independent worker
“Then explain the reasons behind the
price and the different child-care ex-
perience you might have,” she said.
Smartt said most parents want someone
they feel is as qualified as themselves to
take care of their children.
“So. shouldn’t they pay the babysitters
the same per hour as they are willing to
make.'”
Denton lists only one sitting service in
the Yellow Pages — At Your Service.
Co-owner Marie Harrell said the service
charges $3.50 pel hour for one or two
children For each additional child the fee
is increased 50 cents per hour
Harrell said that as far as she knows,
training is not required by state law to
babysit But. she said there are some basic
rules that must be followed.
“First of all ” Harrell said, “you
must have a love for children, it's not
something everyone can do.”
Some basic rules her sitting service
stresses, though, include the following:
• Encourage parents to call is the child
seems uneasy. Ask the parents to leave a
number where they can be reached.
• The sitter should ask about the child’s
routing.
• Always leave the customer’s home
as you found it.
• Never take the child away from the
home without the parent’s permission.
• Never leave the child unattended.
Harrell said her service has many more
rules which must be followed, but one of
the most important ones, she said, is "to
be sure you always enter the door with a
smile.”
At Your Service has been in operation
for two years and this year has been the
busiest, Harrell said.
“As we get busier, we will need
several more babysitters, and we would
definitely hire NT students,” she said.
“We have two now, but their hour, are
limited, so they don’t get to work too
much.”
Babysitting can be a pleasant way to
earn a little extra money, said one NT
student who asked not to be named.
“When I walk into a babysitting situa-
tion, I want to get to know the child or
children I will be babysitting," she said
“Each child has his own personality
Some children will try to manipulate you.
“On the other hand." she said, “I
babysit for a couple of families who have
lovingly disciplined their children. The
children know how to respond to an
authority figure. Babysitting is a situation
like that can be a very pleasant experi
