‘Guru’ of NTTV Channel 36
Student achieves television success
By Tonya NadoUld
Contributing Writer
Greg Ruuska, a 1983 graduate of
Berkner High School, is considered by
many radio, television and film students
and faculty to be the resident studio
producer and NTTV Channel 36 guru.
J. Scott Cook, RTVF faculty member
and NTTV executive producer, said
Ruuska has been around longer than
most students and has been committed
to the RTVF department academically
and professionally since his freshman
year.
“Greg was very enthusiastic when
he began here, even as a freshman,"
said Cook. “He was that rare student
that couldn’t seem to learn enough, and
ever talented in his approach to pro-
duction. Greg is serious, dedicated and
dependable.”
Cook said Ruuska’s goals in RTVF
were focused from the very beginning
(his freshman year) on what he wanted
to do in the department: make the NTTV
cable station an overall success.
‘“NT Scene,’ a magazine-type pro-
gram about the university, was the only
program being produced by the station
in 1985,” Cook said. “But as the
cable station grew and expanded its
programming, I was looking for a stu-
dent to share the work load. Greg was
just the right person. He worked hard
and helped other students to improve
their work, too.”
Ruuska came to NT to major in
RTVF in 1986. He said his brother,
Brian Ruuska, an engineer, was the
primary influence in his life. And
Ruuska thought TV might be a good
major after all, since he had been
producing animated films since the
fourth grade.
Ruuska’s contributions to the de-
partment began in 1986 when he worked
as assistant producer to then Executive
Producer Jeff Hartman of the NTTV
program, “NT Scene.” By spring
1987, Ruuska was the chief producer
of “NT Scene.”
Sports Entertainment) and was an
award-winning show. Greg and George
won second place for ‘Best TV Produc-
tion’ in the Southwestern Journalism
Congress awards in 1988.”
Conductor
returns to NT
By Beth Ziesenis
Staff Writer
School of Music Dean Robert Blocker
is orchestrating the return of conductor
Anshel Brusilow for the fall semester.
Brusilow, conductor of the NT
chamber and symphony orchestras from
1973 to 1982, will come back to replace
Serge Raymond Zehnacker, the present
conductor. For the past seven years,
Brusilow has been conducting at SMU.
“In terms of our search (for a new
conductor), Brusilow was the best can-
didate,” Blocker said.
While at NT. Brusilow’s orchestras
played to standing-room-only audiences.
In 1980, he received the Piper Award,
an honor that goes to the Texas top ten
outstanding college or university in-
structors.
He also received an award from NT
alumni for being a distinguished teacher.
In addition, the NT Student Association
presented him with the 'Fessor Graham
Award in 1975. The ’Fessor Graham
Award is the highest honor given by
the student body to a teacher.
“Everybody — I mean everybody
— knows Brusilow," said Zehnacker's
assistant Richard Dirlam, Bloomington.
Minn., graduate student.
Brusilow was bom in 1928, in Phila-
delphia, and he began his music career
at the Philadelphia Musical Academy
where he started his violin training. At
age 16, he studied under late conductor
Pierre Monteux By age 25, he had
performed violin solos for most of the
major American orchestras and had
served as concertmaster under Eugene
Ormandy in Philadelphia.
Before his first conducting job at NT,
Brusilow spent three years as executive
director and conductor of the Dallas
Symphony Orchestra. He also founded
the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra and
the Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia
In addition, Brusilow served as a
concertmaster for the New Orleans
Orchestra and an associate concertmaster
for the Cleveland Orchestra.
“We’re delighted that he will be
rejoining us," Blocker said.
Dirlam said students and faculty alike
were anticipating the conductor’s return.
“Some of our music school members
are really excited,” Dirlam said. “He
has impressed them. I’ve seen him
conduct — he's an excellent conduc-
tor.
Mark Wessels, Dallas graduate stu-
dent. said a high quality instructor such
as Brusilow might entice higher quality
music students to NT.
‘‘He’H cement our reputation as
being one of the premier music schools
in the country," Wessels said.
Scott Attaway, Austin sophomore,
said the new conductor might breathe
new life into the jazz program
“He’ll add a lot of culture and
diversity to the music department,"
Attaway said.
“MY MAIN OBJECTIVE in pro-
ducing the show was to put the show
on a regular schedule — to produce a
regular show on a regular basis,”
Ruuska said. “The show only aired
when the (then) producers decided to
put it out.”
Ruuska said that with the help of Bill
Mercer, NT’s broadcast coordinator, the
show began to be cablecast on cable
stations in Denton and elsewhere in the
Metroplex for the first time.
"Not too many college students can
say they have produced a regularly
scheduled TV program aired in a major
media market and potentially reaching
so many people,” Ruuska said.
In addition to his work on "NT
Scene,” Ruuska worked as a vide-
ographer at NT football games. Sports
had always been an outside interest for
Ruuska, and he was a freshman football
player for NT. By fall 1987, Ruuska
was co-producing “The Corky Nelson
Show,” a weekly show reviewing the
prior week’s NT football game.
“Greg produced the coach’s show
with George Dunham, now a sports-
caster at KRLD,” Cook said. "The
show got distributed by HSE (Home
IN FALL 1988 Ruuska again pro-
duced “The Corky Nelson Show,”
this time with David Burrall, KNTU
radio’s sports director.
“The show gets better every year,”
Mercer said. “It is very well produced.
Greg is responsible for complete pro-
gramming and the professional quality
of the show.”
Mercer said the quality of Ruuska’s
work could be attributed to the fact that
Ruuska is a quality individual.
“But he’s too serious all the time.
That’s probably because he’s had to
work for everything he has. 1 would
recommend Greg for any job in TV,”
Mercer said.
Cook said. “Very few college grad-
uates can say they’ve co-produced a
program statewide. Greg’s resume is
unique, and he’s ready to handle any
showbiz cliches. Greg is intensely busy
all the time, thinking about how to
improve things in RTVF. If success is
measured by finding opportunity and
taking it, Greg will do great.”
Cook said that initiating activities is
one of Ruuska’s best qualities.
‘Greg acts on ideas. When he comes
to me with one, you can bet the work

is already half done. All he really wants
is my permission, and that’s what will
make this station grow."
Cook said high achievement seems
to run in the family. He was referring
to Ruuska’s brother, Jay, who is a
former Student Association vice presi-
dent.
“I wouldn’t say Greg is an over-
achiever, just a high achiever,” Cook
said. “I wouldn’t know where to begin
listing his accomplishments.”
Ruuska said that along with pro-
duction interests he maintains an interest
in administration.
“I initiated ‘The Last Lecture
Series,’ a show where UNT professors
speak on what their last lecture would
be,” Ruuska said. “I've assisted in
teaching classes such as TV Production,
a class centered on advanced directing,
and I generally provide faculty members
with a student perspective on current
needs.”

“Adultery is a meanness and a stealing, a taking away from someone
what should be theirs, a great selfishness, and surrounded and guarded by
lies lest it should be found out. And out of the meanness and selfishness
and lying flow love and joy and peace beyond anything that can be
imagined. Dame Rose Macaulay

Ruuska said his fulure goals included
