Representatives from campus organizations and local businesses arc gathering
this week at the University Union for NT's first infomart.
NT Infomart began Monday and continues from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m today and
Wednesday in the Union. It is sponsored by the Union. Union Food Service.
University Program Council and the Student Activities Center.
“The idea is to make one-stop shopping available to students lor the first
three days of school,” Christine Smith, program coordinator for University
Program Council, said recently. She hopes the infomart will become a school
tradition, she said.
At the infomart. various organizations and businesses have tables set up in
Union areas including the Union Courtyard and One O'clock Lounge. People
at each table distribute brochures and materials, and answer questions about
their group.
Information at a table set up by Student Activities Center representatives
provides details on organizations including Student Association, fraternities and
sororities, and North Texas Leadership Training.
In the area of student services, sections feature information on student
employment, financial aid, counseling and testing, international programs and
services for handicapped students. In addition, members of Student Association
have set up an area to register voters for the Nov. X presidential election
Zach Tucker, acting coordinator for the University Program Council, recently
said various Denton businesses also arc represented at NT Infomart. Among
them are Sammons Cable Co. of Denton. AT&T Co.. Denton Restaurants
Association, various banks and the Denton Record-Chronicle.

NT students who unexpectedly find
themselves in need of financial assis-
tance may be eligible for short-term
student loans from the Financial Aid
Office until Oct. IX.
Penny Tucker, short-term loan
coordinator, said the loan used to be
called an emergency loan. But many
students thought it could be used for
any purpose.
"The short-term loan is designed for
students who need assistance with
educational expenses,” she said.
Educational expenses include tuition
and fees, books and supplies, room and
board and transportation. "Even car
wpairs may be considered an educational
expense if the car is a student’s only
transportation,” Tucker said.
Students paying in-statc tuition can
get a maximum of $400 for each regular
semester and $200 for each summer
semester. Out-of-state students are
eligible for a maximum of $500 for each
regular semester and $200 for each
summer semester.
Interest on the loans is 5 percent
compounded daily. “Repayment is
usually within two months," Tucker
said.
Loans for this fall will be due Nov. I.
Requirements for the short-terms loans
are ability to pay, which is determined
by monthly income or the existence of
financial aids in the student's name, and
academic record. To be eligible, a
student must retain nine hours if regis
tering for 12 or more, six hours if
registering for nine, and all hours it
registering for six or fewer
Students who have completed up to
44 hours must have a minimum grade-
point average of 1.6 to qualify for the
loans, while those with 45 to 59 hours
need a GPA of 1.8. Students with 60
or more hours must have a 2.0 GPA.
Graduate students must have a 3.0 GPA.
Short-term loan applications are-
available at the Financial Aid Office
on the third lloor of the University
Union.
