Baseball club to finish
at Arlington Baptist
The NT Baseball Club ends its season today with
an afternoon double-header against Arlington Bap-
tist. NT, with 31 victories, already has more victo-
ries in a season than any other team in the school s
baseball history.
Two victories in Arlington today would raise NT s
record to 33-27. NT shut out Arlington Baptist twice
Monday, winning 12-0 and 11-0. In the first game,
Doug Rush pitched a no-hitter, raising his season
record to 4-5. Philip Riney threw a one-hit shutout
in the second game.
The baseball club began its spring season in Feb-
ruary with hopes for a 35-win season that would
prepare the team tor Southland Conference competi-
tion next year. As a SLC requirement, NT must up-
grade its baseball program to varsity status next year
to compete in the conference.
NT baseball coach Alan Karl has already announced
he will not return next season because NT plans to
hire only a part-time baseball coach tor next season.
Others on the club, like NT right fielder Craig
Cox, are thinking of doing the same thing. Cox is
NT’s top hitter with a .384 batting average.
“It depends on how the program develops and on
the new coach," Cox said. "Right now I’m consid-
ering transfering to UT-Arlington. It may be t.me to
move on.” .
Karl said he hopes club baseball members decide
to stay at NT, but said there are those like Cox who
may leave if they get a better offer.
Despite being only a club sport, NT’s baseball
team played against Division I schools like lexas
A&M, Rice, Pan American and UT-Arlington.
All of its games against Division l schools were
road games and NT failed to win a single game against
those teams. „
"The only team that really blew us out was Rice,
Karl said. "We played Pan Am, A&M and UT-
Arlington to fairly close games, but Rice just really
hit against us."
Rice beat NT 13-0 and 14-2 in a double-header
earlier this month.
NT started the season by winning 13 of its tirst
16 games. But NT then lost 10 of its next 17 games,
dropping its record drop to .20-13. Since then NI
has gone 11-14 to bring its current record to 31-27.
