Billboard draws flaming arrocomplaints in Palacios
The Indians were on the warpath, the natives were
restless and what went up eventually came down.
All that occurred last week as a result of billboard
erected on the property of Jimmy and Betty Smith along
the Hwy. 35 By-Pass (Henderson). The problem with the
billboard was its message-advertising a Bay City motel
and encouraging people to shop Bay City.
That, of course, did not go over too well with Palacios
residents and especially Palacios merchants.
The Smiths had been led to believe that the sign would
just advertise the South Texas Inn and that it would be a

relatively small billboard. The couple was not notified
when later the BayCity Chamber of Commerce agreed to
go in with South Texas Inn and advertise shopping in Bay
City. Once the sign was erected by Trans State
Advertising Co. of Houston, the "fireworks" began-that
is. almost literally.
Along with a barrage of phone calls received by city hall
and other local merchants concerning the billboard,
someone tossed gasoline on the large sign and then
attempted to set it afire by shooting flaming arrows at it.
The "Robin Hood” of the highway succeeded in sticking
two gasoline filled arrows into the sign, but failed to cause
a blaze.
The matter was also brought up during last Thursday’s
Palacios Chamber of Commerce luncheon and the
chamber members voiced their strong displeasure of its
placement wihtin the city limits. Chamber president and
Palacios mayor Leonard Lamar noted that he had never
had as many calls in two days about one Item since he had
been in office.
It was pointed out to the chamber members that
"anything could be put up there as long as it’s not
obscene”. One lady, however, commented that the
message on the sign was “obscene”.
Later that afternoon, at the request of the Smiths,
Lamar, along with chamber vice-president Dale Porter,
went to the sign and had it covered with a plastic cover and

a small sign noting that the billboard would be removed at
the request of the Smiths was placed over it.
Lamar said later that he was advised by Bay City
Chamber executive vice-president Jim Sumpter that the
entire incident was a mistake and that the sign was
supposed to have been placed west of Palacios on Hwy.
35 near the Blessing turnoff. Lamar said that Sumpter had
advised him that a letter of apology would be sent to the
Palacios Chamber of Commerce.
"He said he could understand why we were upset,”
