Dear Editor,
During this special season when we “count our blessings”,
the citizens of Palacios should count Wagner General Hospital
and its professional staff as true blessing to the community. I
know I do!
I wish to publicly thank the staff on duty the night of Dec.
4 (Yvonne Hamlin RN, Ann Welch LVN, Jim Dunn MT, the x-
ray tech who’s name I failed to note, and Dr. Terry Kocurek)
for their timely response to our ringing of the ER doorbell,
the professional medical and nursing care and the respect
given to my father who is hard-of-hearing, and the “care”
given to my brothers and myself throughout our visit to the
Emeigency Room. Wagner General Hospital was truly a
"shining light in the darkness” on that foggy night when my
father required medical attention.
It is terrific that we have access to larger hospitals within an
hour’s drive and a large medical center two hours away, but in
my opinion a professionally equipped and staffed hospital
that offers acute, inpatient services is a necessity for Palacios.
Not every patient and his/her family has the transportation,'
ability, finances, time, etc., to drive out-of-town to seek and
receive medical care, and no reason exists why they should be
required to do so. In a true emergency having to drive out-of-
town for medical, care can be life-threatening. Would you like
to drive at least 30 minutes to seek medical care if you were
having a heart attack or a stroke, bleeding profusely, etc.? l\
think not.
Simple things that we all take for granted in a small town
hospital become major undertakings in an unfamiliar larger
hospital complex or large medical center. Ill patients and their
concerned family and friends do not need these complicating
factors when seeking medical care. These problems do not
exist if patients have a local hospital at which they can receive
care, such as we do in Palacios at Wagner General Hospital.
Despite the downsizing of services at Wagner General
Hospital by the Matagorda County Hospital District during
1994, Wagner continues to offer quality medical and nursing
care by a professional and caring staff. They are “open" 24
hours a day and offer medical services to the citizens of
Palacios and the Surrounding communities.
Again, I wish to publicly thank the staff of Wagner General
Hospital for being there when we needed them and to publicly
proclaim that I folly support their efforts to provide medickf
care for Palacios.
Sincerely,
Annette J. Wilson
