Jo Aim Ottis candidate for
130th Judicial District Judge
Jo Ann Ottis has announced
her candidacy for District Judge
of Matagorda County, 130th
District in the March 10th
Republican Primary. She has
authorized the Palacios Beacon to
publish the following announce-
ment concerning her candidacy:
"I am running for District
Judge to give the voters a candi-
date with character, integrity and
honesty. Your vote will confer
judicial authority upon me, I re-
alize that it is not for my benefit,
but for your service," said Ottis.
"I will act on this knowledge to
use that authority to protect all
citizens with justice and impar-
tiality.
"A District Judge must be
fair, dignified, reliable and
hardworking. The judge must be
organized and work diligently to
insure that all citizens have equal
access to the court. The person
elected as district judge should
be a person of high ethical stan-
dards, both personally and pro-
fessionally," Ottis said. "She

the qualifications to inspire con-

Judicial Office.
Citing her 10 years of legal
experience in Matagorda County,
Ottis states she has the scholastic
aptitude, the common sense and
the training necessary to be
judge. Although her practice has
been primarily civil, Ottis states
that she has the capability to
handle all cases efficiently and
effectively. She reports that
throughout her academic years,
that she was honored for her
scholastic excellence. Ottis fur-
ther stales that she has the dis-
tinction of having her legal wrii-
ings published in law journal.
Ottis, the daughter of Fred
and Katherine Ottis, was born
and raised in Wadsworth,
Matagorda County. Alter at-
tending Sam Houston State
University, she taught high
school English and Theater for
five years before entering law
school.She is a member of Holy
Cross Catholic Church.
Ottis wants to be the lirst in-
dividual elected to county wide
office on the Republican ticket.
"1 want those individuals voting
in the Democratic primary to un-
derstand that although my name
won’t be on the Democratic bal-
lot in March, they can vote for
me in the November election."

County Junior College Small
Business Development Center.
The Center will hold a "Tax
Issues for Small and Home-
Based Businesses Seminar" from
6:30-9:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the
south room of the Bay City
Service Center.
This seminar will discuss
which expenses can be deducted
from the small or home-based
business and how to determine
the eligibility requirements for
these deductions. The partici-
pants will learn how to calculate

spotlighted in new video
There’s a wealth in the wet-
lands that goes beyond eco-
nomics, say the farmers featured
in a 23 minute videotape re-
leased on the topic.
"To me, it’s a quality of life.
This slough here. I’m never go-
ing to do anything with. I’m
going to preserve this thing as
long as I live," says Minnesota
farmer Charles Piekarski of a
wetland he restored near his
farmstead. Piekarski and four
other farm families are featured
in "The Wealth in Wetlands."
Each farmer explains how wet-
lands fit into the farming opera-
tion, and outlines the values of
wetlands in terms of the farming
operation and personal satisfac-
tion.
The video, narrated by actor
Leslie Nielsen, also shows wet-
land restoration and conserva-
tion.
