Choirs to hold spring concerts
The Palacios Junior and Senior
High School choirs will present
their 1985 Spring Concert to the
public Thursday, May 16 in the
Palacios Fine Arts Auditorium at
8 p.m. The concert will be free of
charge; however, there will be a
donation box in the lobby for
those wishing to contribute to
the choir’s activity fund.
The concert will feature an
assortment of literature from
Renaissance to Pop. The PJHS
(6th Grade, “B” Choir, "A”
Choir, and KH5 choirs will be

The Palacios choirs have won
many honors this school year,
and have represented Palacios at
KPRC-TV at Christmas to most
of south Texas, placing studems
in the junior and senior high All
Region Choirs, senior high All
Area Choir and All State Choir.
In addition, the Palacios Junior
High Chorus, and the Palacios
High School Choir will also
receive state wide recognition for
their Sweepstakes trophies earn-

The Palacios High School
Chorale will also be performing
for the Palacios Independent
School District's Faculty Awards
Banquet on May 14. Twenty two
of its members will be competing
on the state level in Austin on
June 1.
Director Michael Petrisky com-
mented, ‘‘As you can see, our
year is not winding down yet!
These kids, and their director
cannot afford a case of spring
fever. The students have put a lot
of effort into making these final
activities their best of the year. ”
Petrisky concluded, “1 sincere-
ly hope that the community will
accept my personal invitation, on
behalf of the choirs, to attend
next Thursday's performance.
Palacios' support of our program
has always been excellent, and
the choirs thank you.”
VFW places
markers at
grave sites
The Palacios Post of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars has
undertaken the task of putting
markers on the grave site of all
veterans of the armed forces of
the United States.
These markers are in the form
of a tube of white plastic pipe
driven in the ground with about
1" of pipe above the ground
level. This will make it easy to
place a flag on the grave on
holidays when the veterans’
graves are ordinarily marked.
Anyone having any question as
to whether their veteran’s grave
has been marked are asked to
contact any of the following
members of the Post for help in
this project: Alvin R. Koening,
972-2860, Winfred Johnson, 972-
3298 or Bob Huebner, 972-3283.
It is hoped to have a roster
made up in the future showing
name, date of service and branch
of the armed forces. This will
take time and the help of the
community.

Compensatory programs
review planned May 13
Compensatory programs in
which the Palacios Independent
School District participates will
be reviewed and discussed by
Assistant Superintendent of Pro-
grams Thomas E. Galloway at
the regular board meeting on
May 13.
Compensatory refers to the
fact that the district receives
extra funds from a state or
federal source to compensate or
add services to help students
with an identified learning de-
ficiency. Currently, the main
source of these funds comes from
the Education Consolidated Im-
provement Act (ECIA). Compos-
ed of two parts, Chapter 1 and
Chapter II, the funds are used to
pay salaries of aides and teach-
ers and to buy supplies. Current-
ly, reading improvement for both
the regular school year and
summer programs is the target
area.
Funds are also received for
migrant students. Parents of
these students are involved in the
agricultural or fishing industry
where employment is seasonal
and a need to move is nec-
essary. Mathematics is the key
area of improvement in this
program.
Parents of the students in the
program this year are encourag-
ed to attend this presentation for
their information and to offer any
suggestions for program improv-
ement.
