Teen shooting suspect
taken into custody by

authorities last Friday
A 16-year old Palacios
youth sought by police for
pearly a week in connection
with the shooting of another
Palacios teenager, was taken
Into custody by county law en-
forcement officers last Friday.
According to Palacios Po-
lice Chief Emil Sliva, the 16-
year old juvenile was picked
up at a residence in Sargent by
the Matagorda County Sherif-
f’s Dept, on an attempted
murder custody order issued
by the county juvenile proba-
rflon department. The youth
■was taken to fee county juve-
nile department in Bay City
and subsequently taken by the
Palacios Police Dept to fee ju-
venile detention center in Vic-
toria.
Sliva said fee juvenile will
likely remain at the cotter until
,-a hearing is held in Matagorda
1 County Court.
The youth was being sought
in connection with the shoot-
ing of 18-year old I. J. Polk
following an argument be-
tween two small groups which
occurred Aug. 8.
Polk was shot in the back by
a single bullet from a .380-
caliber pistol which pierced his
liver. He was reported in good
condition at Matagorda Gen-
eral Hospital in Bay City. Polk
was an All-District basketball
player last season for the
Sharks and will be a senior at
Palacios High School this year.
The shooting had occurred
around 1:20 a.m. Aug. 8 near
the comer of 5th and Com-
merce after two group6 of 3-4
individuals each became in-
volved in an argument.

Increase seen in city sales tax rebate

The city sales tax rebate
payments to fee City of Pala-
cios for August were up
sharply from the same month
last year, according to the latest
figures released by the State
Comptroller’s Office.
The sales tax rebate to the
city totaled $19,875.96, an in-
crease of 19.71% from the
$16,603.26 the city received in
just 1993.
fee total amount of rebates for
.the year are down 6.09% from
last year. Thus far the city has
(received $84,995.66 as com-
pared to $90,515.09 for the
same period of time a year go.
Statewide, the Comptroller’s
Office reports rebate payments
for August were up an average
of 9%.
The city sales tax is col-
lected by merchants and busi-
nesses along with fee state sales
tax. Both are filed monthly

for taxes collected on June
sales and reported to the
Comptroller in July.
Among seven area cities,
Wharton has recorded the
largest percentage increase in
rebate payments for fee year,
up 37.17% to $901,527 as
compared to $657,201 for last
1 August. Se ad rift has seen Us
rebates climb 15.33% to
$55,323 while those in Ganado
have risen 9.39% to $62,735.
In Edna, rebates have im-
proved 7.55% for the year to
$379,091 wife Bay City report-
ing a 2.37% gain to $945,630.
El Campo’s rebates have
climbed only slightly, 0.57%,
to $959,313 and Port Lavaca’s
rose 0.45% to $792,471.
The only decline among fee
seven area cities was in Point
Comfort where rebates have
dropped nearly 43% to
$42,495. That compares to fee
$74,222 feat city had received
as of August last year.
An off duty Palacios police
officer arrested last week in
Bay City and charged wife
criminal trespass and criminal
mischief, was formally termi-
nated in a unanimous vote by
the Palacios City Council
Monday night.
The council, after having
met in executive session with
Police Chief Emil Sliva, ap-
proved a motion by council-
man Ed Schulze and seconded
by Terry Mosier to terminate
Officer Paul Soto effective
immediately. Np other public
discussion or comment on the
action was made.
Soto had been arrested by
the Bay City Police Dept,
around 3:13 ».m. Aug. 7 after
he allegedly broke out a front
door window of a house where
his wife was staying in the
1500 block of 4th Street in
Bay City.
He was arraigned before
Pet. 4 Justice of the Peace
Aaron Greene and was released
after posting $500 bonds on
each of the two charges.
Soto, 24, had been with fee
Palacios Police Dept, for five
months.
“It’s sad for police in gen-1
eral when something like this
happens,” commented Chief
Sliva after fee council action.
“Although he wasn’t in uni-
form when it happened, when
they (police officers) put that
badge on they have to be a lit-
tle better than everyone else.”
