CofC discusses joint July 4th participation
Class times set
Working with the Palacios
Lions Club on the 38th annual
July 4th Celebration was one of
the items discussed during the
regular membership meeting of
the Palacios Chamber of Comm-
erce last Thursday.
A total of 18 members attend-
ed the meeting which was held at
Petersen’s Restaurant. President
Leonard Lamar welcomed new
members Butch Bowers, Rita
Cepak and James Hartley (Hart-
ley TV Repair).
Lamar told the members that
the Chamber directors were
scheduled to meet with Lions
Club directors this week to
discuss working jointly on this
year's Independence Day event
held at East Bay. He added that
the Lions Club plans to contact
other civic organizations to see if
they too are interested in taking
part in the event.
“The Lions plans to do alot
more advertising out of town to
get people to Palacios (for the
celebration), but we have to have
something for them to do when
they get here, ” Lamar explained.
He said the Lions would be
seeking ideas on what can be
done to improve the number of
activities during the event. Am-
ong the many possibilities men-
tioned was to check on the costs
of returning power boat races to
the lineup. The races had also
been a premier part of the Lions’
Cfub July 4th e^ent in previous
years, however the increasing
costs to attract the racers had
made it prohibitive recently.
Director Robert Lee also point-
ed out that one of the purposes
of the Chamber's involvement
would be to attract visitors to
Palacios which in turn would
benefit local businesses. “We
need to get the people here and
give them the opportunity to
spend money,” Lee commented.
In other matters, Lamar said
that HL&P had informed him
that 52 engineers and their
families would be moving to the
general area to work at the South
Texas Project, tie said that in an
effort to get some of those
families to reside in Palacios, the
chamber would be gathering
information on the community
and housing conditions from
realtori, to present to HL&P at a
meeting in Houston in the near
future.
The members agreed to once
again send out invitations re-
garding the annual Fishing Tour-
nament Aug. 8-9. Along with
over 2,500 invitations that will be
mailed to individuals who had
purchased fishing licenses at
local outlets, invitations would
also be inserted into montly
statements issued from City
State Bank.
The 1987 tournament will be
headquartered near the East Bay
boat ramp.
STP information director David
Hooper was scheduled to present
an update on the nuclear plant at
the Chamber’s next general
membership meeting on June
4th.
Thank you cards for ribbon
cutting ceremonies were received
from Steve Marlin (Marlin’s De-
partment Store) and Pat Christ-
ianson (Christianson Realty).
Those attending last week’s
meeting were Herb Willke, Bill
Reaves, Max Rotholz, Leonard
Lamar, Roberta Ripke, Esther
Smith, Sonny Brhlik, Jimmy
Smith, Lynda Richter, Donnie
Horton, Rita Cepak, Butch Bow-
ers, Hortense Wyatt, Nick West,
Robert Lee, Veda Dale, Pat
Christianson and Becca Hendrix.
