Rev. Barry Bauerschlag
and Rev. j.R. Gwin offi-
ciating.
Newsom was born May
9, 1898 in Brownwood,
TX and died Feb. 14.
1983 at Wagner General
Hospital. He was the son
of Millard Filmore and
Link Pyle Newsom.
He went through pub-
lic schools of Brown
County. He was a World
Warl veteran. Ralph did
extensive school work in
Howard Payne College.

Texas State Teachers Co-
llege and Horace Greely
Teachers College in Gre-
ely. Colorado.
Newsom spent 49 ye-
ars as Superintendent of
schools; and came to
Palacios in 1927. He
retired in 1964. He was
an outstanding school
superintendent in Texas.
He held a lifetime memb-
ership in the Teachers
Association and was pre-
sented a certificate of life
membership in the Texas
Association of School Ad-
ministrators.
Newsom was a memb-
er of the First United
Methodist Church and
served as chairman of the
building committee for
the new church and Wei-
mer Hall. He served on
the building committee of
the Palacios Recreation
building.
He was past president
and member of the Pala-
cios Chamber of Com-
merce for 25 years. When
he retired from Rotary a
few years ago. he was the
only living charter mem-
ber of the Palacios Rotary
International. He receiv-
ed a plaque in honor of
his 50 active years in
Rotary. He was commis-
sioner of Matagorda Cou-
nty Navigation District
No. 1 over 25 years. In
1980, he was given a
plaque of resolution by
Commissioners Court in
Bay City commending

Ralph for his services. He
had been director of
Midcoast Water Develop-
ment Association. He to-
ok Blue Lodge Degree in
1922. Consistory Degrees
in Galveston 1934-38 and
in El Mina Temple in
Galveston Shriner. He
was past Master of the
Palacios Lodge #990 AF-
AM and past District
Deputy Grand Master of
the 32nd Masonic Dist-
rict. He was awarded a 50
year service award and
lifetime membership in
the Palacios Masonic Lo-
dge.
Newsom was the gui-
ding force of the Palacios
Independent School Dis-
trict for 37 years. He was
a teacher, community
leader, economist, schol-
ar and psychologist, but
most of all an educa-
tor. Not only did New-
som give of himself to
the school system, but
he inspired others to do
likewise, both teachers
and students.
In 1927 at the tender
age of 29. he was elected
superintendent of the
Palacios I.S.D. after ser-
ving the Blessing schools
in the same capacity. At
once, he began streng-
thening the academic
program, shaping up the
discipline and generally
giving direction to the
school system that lasts
to this day.
When the young sup-
erintendent began his
work in the school dis-
trict. it was a district of
some 24 square miles,
had an enrollment of
slightly more than. 400
students, the high school
offered only 17 credits, it
had a property valuation
of about $1,000,000 and
building facilities of two
campuses with a short-
age of teaching equip-
ment. In the next 37
years, the Palacios I.S.D
under his leadership was
to grow to a student
enrollment of over 1400.
through consolidation
and annexation the size
increased to 438 square
miles, high school stu-
dents were offered a
wide range of subjects,
property valuation grew
to over $17,000,000, five
school campuses were
built and the school di-
strict was well equipped.
Ralph lost his only
daughter, Anita Carol, in
1977. He is survived by
his wife. Vivian Johnson
Newsom; two sisters, La-
llie Ford of Spokane.
Washington and Kath-
leen Testerman of Steph-
anville, Texas; two broth-
ers, Wayne Newsom of
Arlington, Texas and Ha-
rry Newsom of Kansas
City, Kansas; and num-
erous nieces and neph-
ews.
Internment was in Pal-
acios Cemetary. Pallbea-
rers were nephews Bill
Harrison, Ruy J. Boland.
Bill Sanders, F.E. Pryor,
Harvey Smith and Sid
Boland. Honorary pall-
bearers were George Ho-
lst, R.C. Shelton, Vic
Kahlich, Charles Mize,
Leon Bullock, Rufus Ad-
ams and Eli Mayfield.
