CURTNG & STORING PECANS:
Pecan" that hav not completely
henr> cured will mold if they are
placed in tight bap . Nuts can be

! made of 1 by 4 inch boards to form
1 the < ides and with one fourth or one
half nch hardware cloth bottoms.
The trays should he placed across
supv orts so air can circulate. The
nt.d -an also be cured in 50 or 100
pound burlap sacks provided they
arc arranged so that air can cir-
culate. If this is done, the bags
should be turned every few days.
Pecans can be kept for as long
as two years if stored in tempera'
tures of 32 to 38 degrees. Pecans
should be placed in cold storage
right after curing is completed.
The nuts should not be stored near
odors as the oil in the pecans will
absorb the odors and cause bad
flavor.
TIME TO PRUNE FRUIT TREES
The best time to prune fruit trees
is in January and February. Prun-
ing is done to maintain a balanced
tree. A tree that is balanced makes
it much easier to spray and to pick
fruit from it.
Pruning is particularly import-

ant practice for young trees. The
pruning during the first 3 years
should be done to shape the head
of the tree. After the first year, a
fruit tree should have developed
3 to 5 branches. The first of these
branchs should be 8 to 10 inches
above the ground with the other
branches alternating 4 to 6 inches
apart to the top. All branches of a
young tree should be removed. The
ends of the remaining branches
should be pruned so that all will
be approximately the same length.
Some pruning should be done
each year. Peaches and plums
should be pruned so that an open
center is left. This provides for
sunlight and also makes easier
spraying. About 1/3 of the year's
growth should be removed each
year.
I)II) YOU RECEIVE A
POINSETT A FOR CHRISTMAS?
If you were one of the lucky ones
that received a poinsetta for
Christmas you will want to follow
these suggestions in taking care
of it. Place it close to the window,
the poinsetta likes lots of light. If
you are keeping it in a warm room
then it will need extra water. As
it begins to shed its leaves use less
water. When all the leaves have
fallen store it in a dark place, and
water occasionally, until the danger
of frost is over. Then prune it back
about half way and repot or plant
it in the yard.
HOMEMAKER’S FILES
Persons hunting the necessary
items for filling out income tax
forms are not the only ones who
could benefit from a simple house-
hold filing system. Such a system
could do away with many last min-
ute search for mislaid bills, can-
celled checks or instruction labels
for every homemaker.

twelve inch folders to file these
items. If you have a flair for ham-
mering, you could make your own
file case from a wooden box, hinge
the lid, paint to match the room
and then locate the file box in a
handy spot. If this is not possible,
then prepare a drawer in a cabinet,
or invest in a new or used file cabi-

drawer or box with different color
labels on the folders for easy iden-

could indicate financial or business
folders and yellow ones housekeep-

Valuable papers such as those
dealing with legal affairs are safe
if placed in a safety deposit box or
a fireproof container.
