June 30 deadline for
WCJC nurse program
The last chance to take
the pre-entrance exami-
nation for the next class
in vocational nursing at
Wharton County Junior
College in Wharton will
be conducted Tuesday.
June 30 at 8 a.m. in
Room 214 of the J. R.
Peace Building.
Classes start August
24 in the 12-month pro-
gram which is state and
nationally accredited and
prepares students for
Licensed Vocational Nur
sing Certificate testing.
The students are ex-
pected to be the first to
occupy classrooms in the
M.G. and Lillie A. John-
son Health Occupations
Center nearing comple-
tion at the northern edge
of the campus.
"We are very excited
about moving into the
new Johnson Health Oc-
cupations Center,”
states Helen Pickett,
R.N. director of voca-
tional nursing.
The laboratory for stu-
dent instruction and
practice will be equipped
to resemble a hospital
unit. A glassed-in show-
er stall and a bath tub
provides students with
an opportunity to prac-
tice patient-care skills
under supervision of
WCJC nursing instruc-
tors.
The medication room
has been patterned after
hospital facilities. Stu-
dents will follow the
routine of giving medica-
tions in th? training lab
under supervision as
they are in the hospitals.
The L B, Outlar Audr-
torium will have modern
equipment to show
films, filmstrips, writ-
ings or drawing dia-
grams. Comfortable
armchairs provide stu-
dents excellent accomo-
dations for note-taking
lectures and talks.
In addition to success-
fully completing the pre-
entrance examination,
applicants for the class
must be a high school
graduate or have a
G.E.D. (High School E-
qufvalency Diploma).
The pre-entrance exami-
nation, which costs,Sip.
is a general informattoh-
type test that Mrs. Pick-
ett says includes "a little
science, a little mathe-
matics, and a little gram-
mar." Additional infor-
mation may be obtained
by contacting the Voca-
tional Nursing Depart-
ment at WCJC, 911
Boling Highway, Whar-
ton, Texas 77488. Phone
(713) 532-4560, exten-
sion 267.
