From the land of the "fat cane” comes n publication intended to fill the void on Texana
bookshelves, all of which lack an in-depth historic survey of Matagorda County. For the first time in
150 years, such a study has been attempted.
HISTORIC MATAGORDA COUNTY, written to commemorate the Texas Sesquicentennial
and containing much heretofore Unpublished material, is a two-volume set, compiled by Mary B.
Ingram, and published by D. Armstrong Co., Inc. The first volume is a history of the county; the
second volume is a series of some 800 biographical sketches and family histories. The 1,500-page
historical/genealogical publication is priced at $60.00 per set (volumes will not be sold separately),
plus $3.08 sales tax for Texas residents. Add $3 00 for postage and handling on mail orders. The
pre-publication price of $50.00 per set, plus $2.56 tax, where applicable, and $3.00 shipping charge is
valid through March 31,1986.
HISTORIC MATAGORDA COUNTY was complied by Mary B. Ingram, present Head
Librarian at the Bay City Public Library. A schoolteacher for thirty years, she was a co-sponsor of the
McAllister School Junior Historian chapter and has published a family history and a prize-winning
church history.
Research on these volumes has been done by hundreds of county residents — from early family
records, Bibles, tombstones, newspapers, city council minutes, church records, organizational
scrapbooks, boxes of papers in closets, photographs dragged from under the couch, clippings and
keepsakes from trunks in attics — all of which contribute to the unique history of the area, which is
covered geographically from Ace to Zipprian’s Corner. /
This publication is a must for anyone who ever lived in Matagorda County, or who has ancestors
or relatives who resided there. It should prove to be a valuable research tool for historian and
genealogist alike.
