course offered
at UH-Victoria
A two-day course in "Record
Keeping'for the Small Business”
will be taught Wed. and Thurs.,
March 27-28, through the con-
tinuing education program of the
University of Houston-Victoria.
The class will meet both days,
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the
Petroleum Training Institute,
3302 N. Ben Wilson.
According to instructor Bob
Meisel, "Owners, managers or
bookkeepers of a small business
can learn practically everything
they will need to know about
record keeping at this work-
shop.”
Specific topics include the
importance of keeping accurate,
up-to-date records; using sales
and purchase journals; business
expenses; and labor records.
Also, cash handling and financial
statements.
Students should pre-register
through the UH-Victoria office of

Accomplishments recounted
by Palacios Speech Squad
While the Palacios Speech
Squad is gearing up for the
University Interscholastic League
(U1L) Spring Literary Meet, they
look back . with pride to the
accomplishments of this school
year.
English teacher, speech and
drama coach, Gloria Walter,
enthusiastically promotes her
program area. And she can be
proud not only of the outstanding
achievements earned by her
students but also can feel pride in
her contribution to the develop-
ment of the academic skill
possessed by these students.
The experience of preparing
for competitive speech events
was a major factor contributing to
Tina Clark's receiving first place
in group interpretation in the
Academic Decathlon recently he-
ld in Houston.
Three of Ms. Walter’s stud-
ents have earned a total of $1100
in scholarships this year. Com-
peting in the VFW Oratorical
Contest earned Hutch Huitt a
$500 scholarship. Rhoda Penland
won a $350 scholarship and Ben
Orsak received a $250 scholar-
ship for his skill in this competi-
tion.

Templeman qualify for the state
meet for their achievement in the
Mock Trial Competition held in
Victoria Feb. 16. According to
Ms. Walter, this was an ex-

cellent educational experience
for the students who participat-
ed.
During the year, the Speech
Squad attends six invitational
tournaments competing with stu-
dents from 5A to A Confer-
ences. The invitational speech
tournaments provide a challeng-
ing experience in preparation for
future UIL activities.
At El Campo in December, Jim
Palmer was a semi-finalist in
Extemporaneous Speaking. Fin-
alists in this competitive event
were: Tonya Dunn, extemporan-
eous speaking. Hutch Huitt and
Dena Wright, prose reading; and
in group interpretation, Hutch
Huitt, Chris Cla;;ton, Denise
Flores, Regina Sellers, Tina
Clark and Sherri Watson.
Semi finalists at Wharton in
January were: Tina Clark, novice
poetry; Paul Meismer, senior
extemporaneous; Jim Palmer a-
nd Tonya Dunn, novice extem-
poraneous; Tina Clark, Ben
Orsak and Sherri Watson, im-
promptu speaking; and Pam
Templeman, novice prose. Hutch
Huitt was a finalist in the prose
reading category.
New names were added to the
already familiar list of finalists
and semi-finalists when the
squad went to Calhoun in Jan-
uary. Semi-finalists were: Ben
Orsak. senior extemporaneous
speaking; Michelle Kelly, Mark
Latapie, and Holly Whitley,
group interpretation; Lauryn Ta-
nner, novice poetry; Denise
Flores, senior poetry; and Patti
Jewell and Sherri Watson, im-
promptu speaking. Finalists in
this event were Paul Meismer,
senior extemporaneous speak-
ing; Sherri Watson, duet impro-
visational acting; Tina Clark,
impromptu speaking; Sherri Wa-
tson and Leigh Ann Meismer,
debate.
Expertise in prose reading won
a place as semi-finalist for
Roxane Michalik, Pam Temple-
man, and Melissa Kocurck at the
February meet held in Austwell
Tivoli. Jim Palmer, extemporan-
eous speaking and debate, and
Mark Frangullie, debate, earned
trophies as finalists.
