have ever heard. Super.”
And the ultimate compliment
to a band director from John
Walton, former director at In-
dustrial and now at Taft, "This
has become a very fine band. You
should be proud of your great
improvement. This is a great job
of sight reading. Your school and
community should be very proud
of this fine band. Be sure, band,
to thank your great director. He
has really brought you a long
way. I enjoyed this. Congratul-
ations. Keep working.”
In the Sightreading Contest,
the band is given a piece that
the band members have never
heard before. They are given
eight minutes to discuss the
number. During this time they
cannot practice nor perform the
piece. To excel! in sightreading,
students must understand finger-
ing, rhythmizing, and hearing
how music fits together.
As he nears the end of his first
year as director of the PHS band,
Marioneaux can look with pride
at the honors that the PHS band
members have brought to the
parents and friends of the
Palacios school system.
Marioneaux’s final comment,
"The kids rose to the occasion
and represented Palacios in an
outstanding manner. ’ ’

Classes will be held form 1
p.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays through
Thursdays, from June 10 to July
3 at the University Center for
Children, 1104 N. Trinity.
Dr. Nancy Burris, director of
the program and associate pro-
fessor of education, said children
will be recommended for admis-
sion to the program based on
results from preliminary testing.
The tests, which include basic
sight words, phonic skills, com-
prehension. and oral and silent
reading, will tell where a child
has weaknesses and if he or she
is reading at or below grade
level.
Students will be tutored by
experienced teachers who are
completing the reading specialist
certification and the master’s
degree program in education.
The testing fee is $35. For
those who are accepted into the
program, tuition is $150. Enroll-
ment is limited to 18 students
and early registration is recom-
mended. Applications for testing
