A great many center parti-
cipants enjoyed the Lackland Air
Force band concert. The center
van provided transportation. We
all wish the concert had been
longer and we certainly appre-
ciate the efforts of the Chamber
of Commerce in bringing such a
delightful evening to all of us.

NEW ARRIVALS
KYLE EVAN
David and Claire Winfield
Embry are the proud parents of a
son, Kyle Evan, born Feb. 25,
1985 at 4:17 a.m. at Doctors
Hospital in Houston.
The new arrival weighed in at
6-lbs., 12-oz. and was 19 3/4
inches long.
Maternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Winfield.
Paternal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Glen Howard.
Kyle Evan was welcomed
home by his brother, Garrett.
thanks for the birthday cake she
baked for his birthday and also
cookies for Valentine's Day.
The center is saddened by the
sudden death of Minnie Irwin
who was a long time parti-
cipant. Our sympathy is extend-
ed to Jo Packer, her daughter,
who has often accompanied her
mother to the center. Minnie will
be greatly missed. We hope Jo
will return soon.
Encouraged by the large turn-
out of quilters more quilting is
being planned. We even had a
man quilter! He did excellent
work, having been taught well by
his mother many years ago.
However, he chooses to remain
anonymous. Since the word
about a male quilter has started
the rounds, more males have
stated that they, also, learned the
art at their “mother’s knee”.
The next big project is a ses-
quicentennial quilt. Each square
will contain an embroidered
Texas scene. Good pictures whi-
ch can be traced easily and
transferred to the fabric will be
appreciated.
To continue “early nutrition
trivia" (Dr. Jean Mayer’s col-
umn in the Houston Post). This
column is giving the history of
early recongition of body needs
of certain substances and atte-
mpts to correct • problems. For
instance, vitamins had to be
extracted from foods and this
took vast quantities. It took some
33,000 egg yolks to get only 100
milligrams, about one-fifth o( a
teaspoon, in order to obtain ribo-
flavin. It took four tons of spinach
to get the first samples of folic
acid. Dr. Jean Mayer states that
once the chemical structure of
vitamins were understood, they
could be produced inexpensively
in the laboratory.
Appreciation goes this week to
Cara and Bruce Herlin for the gift
check.
