The City of Palacios received some good news last
week with word that the Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept,
parks division has approved a $600,000 grant for pur-
chase/development of the proposed Railroad Park prop-
erty stretching from Ritchie to South Bay. (The city had
applied for $750,000 *nd was among the 20 of over city
cities to have their application approved.) Original pro-
posals had include such features as softball field, am-
phitheater, picnic areas and much more. P&WD officials
are expected to meet with city officials to go over the pro-
posals since the funding from the state was less than
hoped for.....Over 350 people turned out last Saturday for
the grand opening dance on the Palacios Pavilion. It was
definitely ’a good time was had by all" affair with large
groups attending from Bay City, El Campo and other ar-
eas. Let's hope many more such activities are
planned....One rattlesnake is enough, but what about 17?
That's what Mike Sparks, Neal Christianson and Mark
Remlinger found while mowing grass. One was a four-
footer while the remaining 17 were youngin's. They failed
to mention where they were mowing.....We've all been
liting, and now it appears Houston is paying attention
too. ThtFRouston Post Sunday carried an article on our
neighbors in Port Lavaca anxiously awaiting Formosa's
announcement on where it will build a $3.2-billion chemi-
cal plant. Calhoun County is in the running due in large
measure to its existing Formosa facility this side of Point
Comfort. The new plant would required 10,000 construc-
tion workers and would create some 2,000 permanent
ones. (Sounds familiar, doesn't it). The announcement
could come at any time. What's good for Port Lavaca-Point
Comfort is good for Palacios in these trying economic
times so let's keep our fingers crossed and knock on
wood. (In this case, knock on plastic)....Give a pet a home.
If you're looking for a pet such as a cute puppy or kitten, a
good place to look is at the City Pound located at the
landfill on Buffalo Road. You can take one home provided
you obtain the animal the necessary vaccination and li-
cense.....

major" in his own school He finds the government and history
courses interesting, feels he could benefit from some more math
courses, thinks the English class (and MacBeth) will be challenging,
but it was athletics that obviously had caught his fancy; football.
Oliver had rowed competitively for his school in Hamburg, and
played a bit of soccer, but until last Friday's victory over Tidehaven,
had never played football. Now he's playing reserve tight end on
the Sharks' team. Prior to the game, his teammates were referring to
him as their "secret weapon.” (Oliver is a rather tall lad and after he
donned his football gear, he said he "looked and felt like a giant.")
He's already compiling a scrapbook of his football career to take
home with him.
After interviewing Oliver at some length over the weekend, I
could probably say more about him, but I won't. I would instead
encourage you to go out of your way, if necessary, io meet him.
You will find an perceptive, enthusiastic, personable and articulate
young man whose English may not be perfect (whose is?), but is
surely good enough to converse intelligently and openly with you.
He's preparing a slide show presentation of the sights and life in
Hamburg and you'll probably have the opportunity of seeing it be-
fore he returns to Germany next July.
Palacios will benefit from the presence of this exchange student,
just as it has from other exchange students from Iceland, Germany,
Tutkey, Australia, Brazil, Luxembourg and other places.
But Palacios doesn't "exchange" many students. According to
Melanie Daily, District Representative of the American Field Service
(A.F.S.), only one student (her daughter Karen-who spent the last
school year in Spain) has applied for the program since the A.F.S.
program became available in Palacios about eight years ago. The
organization is actively encouraging young people between the ages
of 16 and 19 to apply. She points out that about the only qualifica-
tions a potential exchange student needs is an interest in people and
an interest in learning about other peoples' cultures. Knowledge of
a foreign language is not a condition. The cost is roughly $5000
per year, but scholarships from the Trull Foundation and the local
A.F.S. Chapter (Frieda Hester, President) are available to defray a
substantial part of the costs. Interested high school students may
obtain further information and application forms from John Rother
at the high school.
Volunteers for cleanup sought
will be provided.
Cleanup operations will be
from Grassy Point to near Camp
Hulen.
