ving on the committee, can play
an irroortant role bv assisting
in the process of loan applica-
tions and reviews,” said William
P. Hill.
Nominating petitions must be
returned to the FmHA Mata-
gorda county office by Wednes-
day, June 10,1987.

EPA decision expected soon
on rice fungicide registration
U.S. Congressman Mac Swee-
ney today received the assurance
of the Environmental Protection
Agency that it will reach a
decision within two weeks on
registering a fungicide consider-
ed critical by the rice industry.
The decision may come sooner,
according to the EPA, which
would make the product avail-
able to farmers in time for use
during this year’s growing sea-
son.
“We’re on the home stretch
now,” said Sweeney. “Now it’s
time to line up the troops for the
final battle.”
Sweeney recently formed a
bipartisan coalition of 26 rice belt
congressmen to lobby the EPA to
reach a decision on the fungicide,
called “TILT,” in time for this
year's growing season. He cited

the need to stem the more than

rice industry suffers yearly due to
sheath blight, a fungus that
attacks the rice plant.
Plaguing farmers in Texas,
Louisiana, Mississippi and Ar-
kansas, the disease destroys as
much as 58 percent of a state's
rice crop.
TET, manufactured by tjie
Ciba-Giegy Corp., is three times
more active than the fungicide
most commonly marketed for
control of sheath blight, Sweeney
said, and is widely acclaimed by
plant pathologists and agricul-
tural extension officials.
The main concern under con-
sideration by the EPA remains
the chronic effect on fish by the
fungicide, Sweeney said. How-
ever, the Wharton Republican
expressed confidence that addit-
ional data recently forwarded by
the manufacturer will resolve any
remaining questions.

can pass this last hurdle and
finally receive EPA approval that
the company is gearing up its
manufacturing capabilities in or-
der to meet anticiapted demand
for the product,” Sweeney said.
“Because a decision is immi-
nent, rice farmers might want to
postpone purchasing fungicide
products as long as possible.”
Sweeney said he advised Vice ,
President Bush as well as Texas
Senators Phil Gramm and Lloyd
Bentsen of the need for their help
over the next two weeks.
Sweeney represents the 14th
