Check Halloween i reals
Halloween brings
ghosts, goblins and,
sometimes, real danger.
The American Lung As-
sociation of Texas warns
about one danger for
children-the risk of chok-
ing on holiday treats such
as candy corn, hard can-
dy and peanuts.
At Halloween, children
go door-to-door trying to
fill their sacks full of
candy and other goodies.
Parents should insist
youngsters bring the
treats home for inspec-
tion. For the youngest--
two, three or even four
years old-some of the
candy can be divided or
mashed before eating.
The chewing and swal-
lowing muscles of young
children may not be
sufficiently developed to
cope with certain treats.
Choking can result. Hal-
loween goodies may also
‘‘go down the wrong
way" and lodge in the
lung instead of the sto-
mach I his is called
aspiration. A "foreign
object" of any kind in the
lung can cause life-long
problems. At times, sur-
gery for removal is re-
quired.
The best warning is: be
sure children are old
enough to chew and
swallow correctly before
trusting them with small,
hard bits of food. Parents
should always be on

jects" getting into their
TO ALL VOTERS
Dear Friends:
This week you will be reading and The duties of treasurer and auditor
hearing more about the Constitutional
Amendment Proposition #5 - to abolish
the office of County Treasurer and
transfer powers and functions of that
office to the office of auditor In Tarrant
and Bee Counties.
Many will feel that this is no concern
for the people In Matagorda County
and will make no difference to our
county, but a study of the Issues will
show that could be the first step toward
the abolishment of the County Trea-
surer STATE WIDE, or to consoli-
dation of other offices within counties.
Treasurers, by definition, are public
officials who receive all monies,
safe-keep, invest, account for and
disburse such monies upon proper
authority. They are a vital part of a
county organization. By providing dally
should not be vested In a single person,
accountable only to himself. By
merging, needed safeguards against
misapplication of county funds would
be eliminated. This would also elimi-
nate, or diminish, voter control of
county government, In that auditors
are appointed, instead of being elect-
ed. Most citizens prefer to have their
money received and disbursed by an
ELECTED OFFICIAL directly respon-
sible to the people who elected him or
her rather than by an appointed
official.
I earnestly solicit your support in
defeating this Constitutional Amend-
ment by voting AGAINST Proposition
No. 5 in the election November 2.
Sincerely Yours,

mouths. Choking, block-
ed air passages, even
aspiration into the lung
can result.
Moreover, such items
as eyes and buttons
might come loose from
dolls, or wheels from toy
cars. Set a good example.
Don't put anything but
food into your own
mouth. Keep the coffee
table clear of small ob-
jects a child might reach
for. And remember: keep
Halloween and all other
times of the year safe for
your child.

Snug and warm.
Next time winter winds blow,
notice the most comfortable homes
in your neighborhood. You can be
sure those families use a natural
gos heating system.
And for all I he right reasons.
A gas heating system is an out-
standing money saver compared
to an electric system. That's be-
cause gas heating uses primary
energy two and a half times as
efficiently. And it's more depend-
able, too. Which is why natural
gas heating gives the best homes
a warm feeling all over.
