ir. Varsity Sharks Lose To Needville,
Win Over Ganado; Play Here Friday
The Palacios Jr. Varsity Sharks
lost their third game of the year
Tuesday night in Palacios to the
Very big Needville Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays found at the very
beginning of the contest that the
Sharks were not going to be the
easy opponent that they had ex-j
pected to find, but with their over-
whelming height they were able'
to finally outdistance the Sharks
In the final minutes to go home
with a 38-34 victory. Needville is I
thus far unbeaten in District play
Which is going into the second
round of action this week. Jimmy
Adams was the big point producer
for the Sharks pouring in 15 points.
Ernest Garza scored 8 followed by
Douglas Kahlich with 5 and John-
nie Heard, H. T. Anderson, Kenny
Wallace with 2 each.
The Sharks got their 12th vic-
tory of the year by beating the
Ganado Indians 38-30 Friday night
after coming close several times to
being defeated.
The Sharks seem to have prob-
lems all night never really getting
their offensive machine to working

Adams who is usually the big point
getter for the Sharks never was
able to find the basket until the
final quarter of play when he put
in three quick baskets which meant
the difference in the game.
Friday night the Sharks host
the powerful Boling Bulldogs in
Shark gym. Game time is 6 o’clock.

The 8th Grade Hornets started
their season off with a smashing
victory over Lolita 34 to 14. Billy
Farris had 16 points, Gene Kubecka
6, Scott Arndt 4, Robby Curtis and
Landis Laurence 3 each, Dean Ku-
becka and Claude Boultinghouse 1.
High point man for Lolita was
Frang with 6.
The next ball game was in Bloom-
ington in which the Hornets won
in an overtime by a score of 32 to
26. Arndt scored 18, Farris 5, Gary
Corporon 4, Gene Kubecka 3 and
Johnny Flores 2. High point man
for Bloomington was Heironach
with 10.
The Hornets lost their first game
to Edna by a score of 32 to 19.
High point men were Arndt with
12 and Gene Kubecka 4. High point
man for Edna was Allums with 14.
The next district game was play-
ed here when the Hornets defeated
Ganado 34 to 26. Gene Kubecka
scored 13, Curtis 8, Farris 7,
Arndt 4 and Corporon 2. High point
man for Ganado was Webemick
with 9.
The first game of the second
round was with Lolita in which
the Hornets defeated them 29 to 22.
Gene Kubecka had 14 points, Arndt
4, Corporon 3, Curtis, Farris,
Flores and Alfred Rocha 2 each.
The Hornets played Blooming-
ton for their second time and were
beaten 26 to 23. High point man
was Arndt with 12. High point man
for Bloomington was Herros with
12 points.
The next week the Hornets play-
ed host to Edna and Edna won in
the final two minutes of the game
by a score of 25 to 18. High point
, man was Gene Kubecka with 8.

The 8th Grade Hornets traveled
to Port Lavaca to enter their an-
nual tournament. They played
Edna and lost 34 to 24. The next
game was with Port O’Connor and
VIETNAM—Marine Private First
Class Herminio Rodriguez, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Juan Rodriguez of
515 11th St., Palacios, completed
two weeks training at the Combin-
ed Action Program School at L'a-
nang.
Ho received instruction in the
Vietnamese language, oustoms and
religions. He also received special-
ized training in small unit tactics
for use against enemy forces.
He will now join a Combined
Action Group in the five northern-
most provinces of the Republic of
Vietnam. This school prepares Ma-
rines and Navy corpsmen for duty
with the CAP's.
CAP units, comprised of ap-
proximately 15 Marines and one
Navy corpsman, plus about 34 local
Vietnamese militiamen, are design-
ed to maintain security for small
hamlets and villages. The men work
with the local villagers and per-
form various civic action deeds
establishing good relationship with
the people.
the Hornets won 36 to 33. The
Hornets played for consolation and
lost to Fannin 34 to 26.
On January 24th the Hornets
traveled to Bloomington to par-
ticipate in their tournament. Their
first game was with St. Phillip’s
of El Campo. The Hornets success-
fully defeated them 34 to 22, then
they played Ganado and defeated
them 42 to 28. That night the Hor-
nets played for first place and
were defeated by Edna 50 to 25. The
Hornets brought home second place
honors in the tournament.
The Hornets will finish up their
season in Ganado, their final dis-
trict game. They are 4 and 3 in dis-
trict play, and hope to have an 8
to 6 season record so on February
12 everyone come and support the
Hornets as they travel to Ganado.

Sharketfes Lose Two Tills Past Week;
'B' Felines Register Win And Loss
The Palacios High School Shark-
ettes’ “A” team suffered two losses
the past week, and the “B” team
registered a win and a loss.
Friday, Jan. 30, the “A" team
lost to the Ganado Maiden 70-45.
Our offense that night were Phyllis
Farris, Karen Johnson, Fletchie
Heard, Betty Johnson, Rosalie Gar-
cia, and Phyllis Barnett. Our high
pointers were Karc-n 16, Phyllis F.
11, Fletchie 10, and Betty 8.
8th Grade Girls
Win Consolation
Trophy At Tourney
The eighth grade basketball girls
brought home| the consolation
trophy earned at the Port O’Con-
nor Doilphini Tourney Saturday,
Jan. 24.
The preliminary game was lost
to Refugio, 23 to 12. In the consola-
tion playoffs, the Hornets beat
Fannin 20 to 16. Scoring forwards
were Petra Flores with 8 points,
Vickey Hunt with 6 points, and
Cindy Koening with 6 points. Other
offensive players were Adeline Gar-
cia, Lilly Flores, and Sandra Lar-
com.
The defense consistantly held the
Fannin team to 4 points each quart-
er. Defensive players in the tour-
ney were Rosie Gatica, Rita Koch,
Desiree Shelton, Shirley Guerra,
Caroline Garcia, Ernestine Gon-
zales, Cynthia Islas, Stella Roy,
and Judy Smith.
The eighth grade girls will play
their last basketball game Monday,
February 2 against Tivoli.
There is a greater demand for
people of character today than any-
time in our history.
Doctors are so busy nowadays
that lots of people get well before
the date of the appointment ar-
rives.
Our defense for the game wore
Brenda Farris, Cynthia Burkett,
Carol Buffaloe, Sylvia Morales,
Shelley Harrison and Kathy Arndt.
The “B” team lost to Ganado
63-16. On tihe offense for the
Sharkettes were Brenda Johnson,
Sylvia Garza, Tiana Trammell,
Johnnie Novak, Barbara Hudgins,
Ann Remlinger and Yolanda
Flores. Our scorers were* Tiana 14,
Johnnie and Yolanda 1 each.
On defense were Helen Haynes,
Charlene Monroe, Janet. Harrison,
Mable Holloway, Patti Smith, and
Garmelita Rodriguez.
lOn Tuesday, Jan. 27 the Shark-
ettes traveled to Santa Fe and
the “A” team lost 41 to 34.
The Sharkettes led the first
quarter, but by halftime trailed the
Indians 22-18. During the third
quarter the Indians edged up a lit-
tle further and led 34-28. The
Sharkettes did a much better job
in the last quarter hut were not
able to pick up enough points.
High pointer for Palacios was
Karen Johnson 21, followed by
Phyllis Farris and Fletchie Heard
with 7 points each. Another fine
offensive player was Betty Johnson.
Our defensive standouts were
Kathy Arndt, Cynthia Burkett,
Brenda Farris, Sylvia Morales,
Carol Buffaloe, and Rosalie Garcia.
In the “B” game the Sharkettes
won their only game defeating San-
ta Fe 19 to 10. In the first quarter
Palacios scored only 4 points but
held the Indians to 2. Palacios led
at the half 7 to 3. with the scoring
picking up in the third quarter
for both sides, but Palacios con-
tinued to lead 15 to 8. The final
score was Palacios 19, Santa Fe 10.
Tiana Trammell was high pointer
with 15, followed by Brenda John-
son and Johnnie Novak with 2 each.
Sylvia Garza and Senora Yanes
also were responsible for keeping
the Sharkettes in the game.
Our tremendous defense that
kept the Santa Fe score down to a
minimum was Carmelita Rodriguez,
Pattie Smith, Charlene Monroe,
Helen Haynes, and Janet Harrison.
