F.I\ "SONNY" RRHLIK, Matagorda County Precinct
#3 Commissioner holds a certificate of appreciation
presented by Ronnie Callahan, President of Palacios
Area Emergency Medical Service, Inc. (PAEMS) for
Brhlik's help in involving the county with the service,
llrhlik became involved in finding a replacement for
the Palacios VFD, which wanted out of the ambulance
business, some eleven months ago. llrhlik commented
that he appreciated the community support, from the
people and the City of Palacios, and that lie felt the
PAF.MS volunteers would be just as successful as our
armed services volunteers were in Kuwait. Callahan
(left), who is perhaps better known for action than
eloquence, said of the long process leading up to this
point, "I'm glad it's over. Now we can get to work."

Volunteers needed for Ml SA-v«ro4

local Iviu bate program pavilion
Volunteers, and lots of ’em,
arc needed for the April 13 Kid-
Safe program at the Palacios
Recreation Center. Because
there hasn't been a Kid-Safe
program in Palacios before, you
may be wondering exactly what
it entails.
Essentially, the Kid-Safe
program works like this: About
500 kids, ages four to 12, will
come to the Rcc Center where a
number of booths have been set
up. Each booth will present
some aspect of personal safety,
such as boat safety, electrical
safety, lire safety, drug/alcohol
awareness, using the telephone
in an emergency, gun safety, bi-
cycle safety, traffic safety, per-
sonal safety, CPR, etc. Children
will go to a booth for a, say, 20-
minutc presentation-and then go
to the next booth for another.
Admission is free and the booths
will be open from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m.
Volunteers arc needed to as-
sist in some of the booths. In
addition, volunteers are needed
to handle the mass of people who
will be attending. Help will be
needed in crowd-kid traffic
control, parking, registration and
check-out, set-up and clean-up,
food service (a free meal will be
provided), and to monitor bath-
Sailor group to
meet March 16
at Serendipity
The Palacios Association of
Sailors (P.A.O.F.) will hold a
meeting Saturday, March 16, at
9 a.m. at the Serendipity Recre-
ation Hall. A Coast Guard offi-
cial will talk about boating and
sailing safety, followed by a day
sail, weather permitting.
All interested persons are in-
vited to attend. For more infor-
mation call 972-5454.
Buyers' Breakfast
Friday to support
fair auction sale
The annual Buyers' Breakfast
vril be held Friday morning
(March 8) at 7 a.m. at Petersen's
Restaurant in downtown Pala-
cios.
The purpose of the dutch treat
breakfast is to bring together all
buyers planning to take part in
the auction sale at the Matagorda
County Fair. Sale time is 1 p.m.
on Saturday, March 9, at the
County Fairgrounds in Bay City.
Anyone interested in partici-
pating in benefiting die local area
youth by purchasing projects or
donating to the fund is invited to
attend.
rooms. If you have a specially
area of expertise you feel is rele-
vant to a child’s safety, you
could have a booth or assist in a
booth. If you, or your club,
would just like to help out, there
will be plenty to do. Volunteers
don't necessarily need to be at
the event all day-even a couple
of hours would be a great help.
Anyone and everyone inter-
ested in volunteering for this in-
novative, possibly life-saving,
program is urged to call Mayor
Leonard Lamar at 972-3605.
Flags flown over U. S. capital available for sale
By Rep. Greg Laughlin
House Concurrent Resolution 44, which passed on Feb. 20,
calls on the American people to display the American Hog in sup-
port of U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf. I supported the resolution
and I encourage you to honor our troops by flying your American
flags. These people deserve a U.S. welcome home for a job well
done.
If you would like a flag flown over the nation's capital and sent
to you for display, you may order a flag through my Washington
office: The Office of Congressman Greg Laughlin, 218 Cannon
House Office Bldg., Washington, D.C. 20515. Prices arc $7.69
for a 3 x 5 cotton llag; $6.69 for 3x5 nylon; $9.79 for 4 x 6 ny-
lon; $17.82 for 5 x 8 cotton; and $15.35 for 5x8 nylon. Make
checks payable to Greg Laughlin. The flag will be mailed to you
with a certificate signed by me within four weeks of your order.
The Bill Sky Family, and old-
time string band trio, will be ap-
pearing at the Palacios Pavilion
beginning at 5 p.m. this Satur-
day. The group features music
of the clawhammer banjo, the
guitar, mandolin, autoharp, dog.
house bass fiddle, harmonica and
folk rhythm instruments, along
with some mountain jig and clog
uancing.
You may have seen the Bill
Sky Family on Good Morning
America, or the Cable News
Network or appearing with Dolly
Parton; or you may remembef
them from last year's PAHA
soup and salad supper where the-
trio wowed everyone there.
And they'll be here again, oh
the Pavilion, early enough so
you can still go to the fair after-
wards. They’re sponsored by
the Palacios Parks Department*
Donations arc welcome
