Sharks battle
in track meet
The varsity Shark track
team participated in ifi
first meet of the season in
Sweeny over the week-
end with the team collect-
ing 30 points against stiff
competition.
In the field events,
Eloy Garcia nabbed
fourth place in the pole
vault with a jump of
11 ’6”. Danny Collins was
fifth in the shot put with a
tossof48'8". Sixth place
finishes were posted by
Freddie Jackson in the
long jump at 20'7" and
Gus Flores in the discus
at 120’6”.
Jackson recorded one
of the best finishes for
the Sharks during the day
with an 11.5 timing for
third place in the 100
meter dash.
Frank Solis was fourth
in the 3200 meter run at
10:59. In the 3200 meter
relay, the team of Frank
Castanon. Solis. Martin
Ortiz and Matt Miller
was fifth.
The Sharks also tpok
fifth iq the 1600 meter
medley relay with the
team of Jackson, Law-
rence Garcia. Miller and
Solis. In the 1600 meter
relay.Castanon, Garcia,
Leroy Jewell and Robert
Sanchez took fifth place

The 8th grade girls
track team at Palacios
Junior High took part in
the Friskies Relays over
the weekend. The Shark-
ettes placed sixth overall.
Wharton won the meet
with 132 points with
Alvin second at 70. Thir-
teen other schools were
also in the competition.
Kim Drinkard recorded
the only first place for the
girls, taking the 200-me-
ter dash in a time of
17.55. Yvette Garcia was
second in the triple jump
at 28' 11". Garcia also
claimed third place in the
1(H) meter hurldes with at
time of 18.6.
Placing fourth in the
800 meter run was Linda
Shimek with a time of
2:44.3. The 1600 meter
relay team of Carmen
Flores. Fay Halloway,
Shimek and Rhonda Ka-
cer placed fifth with a
time of 4:59.97.
Denise Avcock earned
a fifth place finish in the
discus at 71 ’7”.
Rod Solis wins pole vault;

the pole vault as the
Palacios 8th grade Sand-
sharks finished seventh
in track and field action
over the weekend.
Second place honors
went to Paul Huerta in
the discuss with a toss of
117-feet. Leo Sanchez
placed fifth in that event
with a HIT’. Huerta
also earned third place in
the shot put with a throw
of 43-feet.
Darren Bordousky was
third in the 880 run with a
time of 2:15. Joe Guerra
placed fifth in the 1600
meter run with a time of
5:20.
