gets boost
The anticipation of support-
ers of the Palmetto Bend Dam
Project rose another few
notches Monday when an-
nouncement was made by Con-
gressman John Young’s office
in Washington, D.C. that the
President’s budget request in-
cluded $12,296,000 for conti-
nued construction of the Pal-
metto Bend Project in fiscal

bird stadium football field
lights Monday morning during
a special called meeting. Bids
were received from KGS
Electric of Victoria and Lloyd
Electric of San Antonio. They
ranged from a low bid of
$51,856 to a high bid of
$78,856. The committee de-
ferred action on the bids,
[tending further study. The
committee will meet a half-
hour before the Feb. 11 re-
gular meeting of the school
board to decide what recom-
mendation to make to the full

The face ufGoliad County will
be changed this year as local
agriculture responds to the
times. Such is the prognosis
of County Agent Leroy Haj-
dik in his 1974 report and 1975
forecast. Because of the de-
pressed beef tattle market,
corn and grain sorghum pro-
duction will go up by 50 per-
cent in the county. Hajdik ex-
pects an increase of 10,000
acres In these grain crops.

The 1975 Spring Race Meet
at LaBahia Downs, Goliad, is
assured of another success
with the announcement that
some 220 of the top two and
three year olds in the nation
have been nominated for their
rich stakes. The 1975 Texas
Futurity trials are scheduled
for Saturday, March 29 with
the finals on Sunday, April 6.

It was reported at the annual
banquet of the Volunteer Fire
Dept. Tuesday night that be-
ginning March 1 Palacios
would receive a 25 percent
good fire -record credit. Of-
ficers of the Dept, for the
following year were: Price
bamett, chief; John C, Rich-
ards, assistant chief; Glendale
Claybottrn, secretary-trea-
surer.
Tee Tiemann and his orches-
tra were to play for the 2nd
annual Arabia Shrine Temple
Crippled Children’s Ball on
the payillon February 25.
Aluminum Company of Ame-
rica Saturday poured the first
aluminum in Texas at the Point
Comfort Production Works.

Miss Peggy Miller was the
1950 Sports Queen.
The chamber of commerce

Fire loss for 1944 was re-
ported as $49,895 at the Fire-
man’s banquet Monday night.
Twenty-three alarms had been
answered by the local depart-
ment.

James, deputy fire marshal
and chief of the safety divi-
sion of the Houston Fire Dept.,
were guest speakers at the
annual banquet of the volun-
teer Fire Dept.
S. O. Eidman, county tax
collector-assessor, reported
3,550 poll taxes paid, an in-
crease of 1450 over 1939.
Charley H. Eddy announced
as a candidate for constable.

Sherwood Barber was elected
chief of the Volunteer Fire
Dept, and Millard Broking,
secretary-treasurer. Ed Bar-
rett was re-elected assistant
chief.
Approximately 300 members
of the V.F.W. and Ladles Aux-
iliary of District 16 attended
the spring convention here
Sunday.
The Summer Recreation
Program, being sponsored by
the Lions Club, was assured
after the Harmonie Club’s
successful Sweetheart Dance
at which Jeanette Allen was
crowned ValenMne Sweet-
heart.
Noel D. (Potsy) Curtis an-

Mrs. Gladys Alcorn of Bol-
ing, Deputy Grand Matron, vi-
sited the local Order of the
Eastern Star Chapter Tues-

The Volunteer Fire Dept,
held their annual banquet and
elected the following officers;
John D. Bowden, chief; J. G.
Walker, assistant chief; J. B.
Feather,secretary-treasurer;
D0 D. Paulk, George Hunter
and Hugh Dismukes, foremen
of squads No. 1, 2 and 3
respectively.

The Price Lumber Company
was awarded the contract to
furnish lumber for the build-
ing of the new hospital in Camp
Hulen.
Marriages announced were
Miss Gertrude Stewart and
Fred Thompason; Miss Honor
McFarland and H. L. Klennert.
Poll taxes paid for theentire
county were 3741, Palacios
had 431.
50 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Appleton
arrived here from Denver,
Colorado for a visit.
Fire destroyed the frame
house on the farm of Mrs.
Ruby Redman west of town,
J. E. Dorris and family, who
lived there, lost practically
all their household posses-
sions and clothing.
55 YEARS AGO
The cottage at the corner of
5th and South Bay Blvd. was
moved to the corner of 4th
and South Bay Blvd. and made
into a beautiful home for Mr.
and Mrs. H. B, Farwell.
All stock for the city sewer
system had been sold and a
mass meeting of Palacios ci-
tizens celebrated wttha huge
bonfire.
Both pasture land and crop land
qualify for a Federal Land Bank loan
if properly managed. Remember
that the Land Bank Association
located right in your area is familiar
with local conditions and local
needs—and will do everything possible
to provide a long term loan at
reasonable cost.

The Zeta Alpha Chapter of
Delta Kappa Gamma met Feb-
ruary 8 at the Oasis In Bay
City with 47 members pre-
sent.
The occasion was a birthday
luncheon celebrating the or-
ganization of the local chapter
on February 20, 1960.
Hurley’s also presented a
style show during the luncheon
which was en joyed -Immensely—
by all.
The Valentine scheme en-
hanced by birthday candle cup-
cakes for each member made a
lovely setting for the birthday
meeting.
The business session pre-
sided over by President Eve-
lyn Johnson of Bay City
followed a delicious luncheon.
Sunshine Edwards of Pala-
cios presented the devotional.
President Johnson Intro-
duced our new transfer mem-
ber from El Paso, Marguerite
Kelley of Palacios.
Hostesses for the occasion
were Margaret Douglas,
chairman; Ester Smith, Fran-
ces Rose, Mildred Pennington,
Faye Vos, Ann Nell Gann and
Linda Buss.

Party set
The Tres Palacios Garden
study Club held its first
meeting of the year at the
home of Gladys Runyon on
January 28th at 3 p.m.
Meeting was called to order
by the President, Gertie Ro-
berts, followed with the read-
ing of the "Gardener’s Pray-
er”.
During the business meeting
which followed, plans were
completed for a Valentine
Party at Leisure Lodge on
February 14th at 2 p.m.
Helen Barr presented the new
yearbooks with suggestions
about the various programs.
The hostess served Socia-
bles with pimento cheese
spread, cake, cookies, nuts,
coffee and fruit juice to the
eleven members and five
guests present.

Auxiliary meet
Steve Walters, Jr., District
Administrator of the Mata-
gorda General Hospitl Dis-
trict, and Patrick Wallace,
Administrator of Wagner Gen-
eral Hospital were special
guests at the February 3 meet-
ing of the Wagner General
Hospital Auxiliary, which met
at 2 p.m. at the hospital.
Discussed at the meeting was
what the Pink Ladles could
do. There is need for books
and magazines at the hospital,
if you have some and would
like to give them away, please
leave them at the hospital.
Also, if you have any middle
size plastic dishwashing soap
bottles, the Pink Ladies can
put them to good use.
These too can be left at the
hospital.
Mrs. Lurlle McCall waswel-
come as a new member of the
auxiliary.
Art Club

Bay City Country Club was
the scene of the Installation
of officers for the Golden
Crescent Porcelain Art Club,
Saturday, Feb. 1. Hostesses
for the occasion were Mrs.
Betsy Holbert and Mrs. Jane
Horn.
Mrs. L. A. Westlake, of
Hurlingen, president of the
state organization of Porce-
lain Art Clubs, and Mrs. Fos-
ter Pressley of Alamo, vice
president of P.A.C. were pre-
sent to Install the officers.
Mrs. Pressley, a profession-
al porcelain painter, gave a
demonstration to the group.
Officers Installed were Ann
Sikes of Port Lavaca, presi-
dent, Mrs. C. W. Perry of
Victoria, vice president, Mrs.
Bob Guttenberger, of Bless-
ing, recording secretary, Pa-
tricia Gustafson of Port La-
vaca, corresponding secre-
tary, Mrs. Ray Clements of
LaWard, treasurer, and Mrs.
Ernest Boyd of Victoria, his-
torian.
Plans were made for at-
tending the state convention
of Porcelain Art Clubs to be
held In Brownsville, April 3-
6. Delegates to the convent-
ion are MlssSlkes,Mrs. Wal-
ter Skutca Sr., of Blessing,
Grace Rabe of Point Com-
fort, and Mrs. Ernest Boyd
of Victoria. Alternate is Mrs.
Betsy Holbert of Bay City.
On February 3, 1975 the re-
gular meeting of the Athena
Club was called-to-order by
the president, Mrs. Blanche
Claybourn with nineteen mem-
bers present.
The meeting opened with
prayer led by Thelma Batch-
elder, followed by the pledge
of allegiance to the flag.
The minutes of the meeting
for January 6 and 20 were
read, corrected and approved
with corrections.
A communication from
Gladys Wickham accepting
membership in Athena Club
was read.
The motion made by Patri-
cia Raplee to give $10.00 to
the Harmonie Club was se-
conded by Rosemary Kesseler
and passed.
Loretta Wright announced the
members of the program com-
mittee for 1975-76 were:
Louise Crawford, Jennie
Cooper, and Dorothy Roussel.
A very Interesting and in-
formative program on "al-
cohol in Our Country Today”
by Thelma Batchelder, and on
“Drugs” by Carolyn Douglas
was given.
The meeting was adjourned
with the reading of the Club
Collect.

1:30 p.m.

loop of freezer tape with the
sticky sides out. Secure It to
the bottom of your pan before
placing It in the basket or
carrier."

ing of the Women’s Division
of the Chamber of Commerce
will be held Tuesday, Feb-

tersen’s Restaurant.
All women of the area In-
terested In civic Improve-
ment are invited to attend
this "Dutch-treat” luncheon
and enjoy an hour of fellow-
ship.

Women’s Club
The Prairie Center Wom-
en’s Club held their regular
meeting Friday afternoon,
Feb. 7, at the home of Mi's.
Helen Bowers with nine mem-
bers and one guest, Mrs. Lela
Smtth, attending.
Meeting was opened with the
reading of the Club Collect.
Marguerite Arlla had as her
program "Kitchen Hints,"
some from grandmother’s day
and some from today’s kit-
chen, assisted by the club
members.
Our hostess then served
sandwiches, chips and dip,
coffee, cokes and Valentine
candles during our social
hour.
Our next meeting will be
at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21,
at the clubhouse for games
and refreshments.
