Several things of special In-
terest happened this week.
First, our John Pawson of
Wisconsin away back In 1908
came to Texas with Teddy
Roosevelt to stop Poncho
Villa’s forays across the
Texas border. He was one of
thousands who came to El Paso
and on Into Mexico chasing
Villa. You don't remember but
I do - they didn’t catch him.
Our very Interesting friends
from Belize City, Belize (Bri-
tish Honduras) who made their
third trip here, the Duecks
were surprise guests this
week. They again were looking
for good used farm machinery.
They are In a 1000 member
colony of Mennonite people of
German descent.
Guess what? Mary Jo Wil-
liams Chiles and husband,
Jack, have purchased Mary
Jo’s old home on Fourth Street
from the Emmett Chiles es-
tate (no kin). How nice to have
such fine people coming back
to our town.
We also enjoyed Washington
.state candy called Aplets sent
by Mrs. Momblow who has
returned home there.
The Valentine parade was
certainly Interesting and
beautiful. Of course our peo-
ple were on the wrong corner
where there was no music.
Next year we’ll find a place
where we can enjoy the bands
more.
I was glad to see Yoakum,
Hallettsvllle and Cuero repre-
sented. Hopefully our fame is
spreading and we’ll have more
each year.
Congratulations April! Also
to the group who decorated
Candyland.
Sunday night we were en-
tertained with slides and very
interesting description of
Barbados.
Doris and Clark Whiteiaw of
Winnipeg shared their trip
with us. They flew over to
this desert paradise and the
sunsets were beautiful enough
to merit a visit.
Barbados Is independent and
medical care Is free for all.
Of course vegetation Is lush
with wide tie aches on the At-
lantic and Carribean seas.
Barbados is situated really
between these two seas about
two and one half or three
hours flight from Florida,
Haiti and Barbados and I have
a time getting to Blessing!
The men continue enjoying
golf but of course the weather
hasn’t helped.
Tuesday evening Florence
Johnson In having a turkey
dinner with dishes from old,
so you see a feast will be en-
joyed.
Can you believe that half of
February Is gone and March
1st when a few must return
home will soon be here!
Sales tax
Ians change
Comptroller Bob Bullock
said Tuesday that some sales
tax permit holders who had
to post bonds because their
businesses changed legal sta-
tus in 1974 may request that
their bond requirements be
reconsidered.
Bullock said reconsidera-
tions would apply to business
which had been In existence
without bond requirements
prior to 1974 but during 1974
underwent changes in legal
status without actual^- chang-
ing management or ownership.
These could include such
changes as a small business
becoming a corporation, a sin-
gle ownership becoming a
partnership, a merger of two
businesses or a former per-
mit holder applying for rein-
statement.
“If our review shows the
bond is unnecessary, we’ll
release it,” Bullock said. “As
I’ve said before, it’s wrong
to penalize a business with
a good taxpaying record just
because the business changes
its name.’'
