KWAJALEIN—(Soundphoto)—The U.S.S. Pennsylvania, sur-
vivor of atom bomb tests at Bikini, goes finally to her grave in the
Pacific. The veteran of both world wars is shown as she settled into
the sea after her sea valves were opened in deep waters off Kwajalein.
The Navy has sunk two other Bikini targets which were found so
heavily contaminated as to make further use of them dangerous.

First Spring Days
Bring Fires, Says
Fire Commissioner
AUSTIN, April 6—There has
been a smell of mothballs, gasoline
and death in the air since the first
day of spring, says Marvin Hall.
The State Fire Insurance Com-
missioner attributes these ominous
odors to the packing away of win-
ter clothing and warns Texas house-
wives that there are many fire haz-
ards connected with this annual
job.
"Above all, do not clean winter
garments with gasoline before they
are stored away,” he emphasized.
“Gasoline, naptha or benzine should
never be used for cleaning purposes
in the home, in the yard, or else-
where.
“Only approved cleaning solvents
should be used for taking off spots.
Carbon tetrachloride is a safe and
inexpensive cleaner. Clothing need-
ing extensive dry cleaning should
be sent to a commercial establish-
ment.”
Clothing that is no longer wear-
able because of size, style or wear
should be discarded immediately,
Hall urged, end suggested that they
be given to some charitable organ-
ization.
“Old clothing stacked in an at-
tic or cellar is one of the best fuels
for a fire once it has started,” the
Commissioner stated. “Also cloth-
ing placed near defective or worn
electric connections creates an ex-
cellent ‘starter’ for a fire. The same
holds true for inflammable boxes
or bundles placed too near electric
light bulbs in the tops of closets.”
